Summer is slowly winding down but there is no shortage of fresh activites to keep you busy this weekend in Brisbane. From stunning art exhibitions, an Anti-Valentines Party (for all the haters out there), to festivals aplently, and everyones favourite vegan markets making a welcome return, Brisbane is practically buzzing. 

If you work to play, then I can promise you there's a lot of playing to do in Brisbane this weekend!

Thursday 9th

Alex Buckingham Time After Exhibit

Even if you don’t recognise the name Alex Buckingham, chances are you’ve seen his work at some point of his four decade long career. Companies that have used the award-winning photographer’s include Smirnoff, Moet, Guinness, Tetley's, Strongbow, Carlsberg, Kelloggs, Cadbury and Nokia. This stunning new exhibition, Time After, showcases his private photographic works in an evocative look at his expansive career.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s Screening

“I say, what about, Breakfast at Tiffany’s?” If you’re a fan of this bonafide Hollywood classic, displaying Audrey Hepburn at her absolute best, then you’ll love seeing it on the big screen under the stars. Pull up a lawn chair, grab an extra large popcorn, and make the most of the open bar. Date night = sorted.

Friday 10th

Flickerfest 2017

In its 26th year, Flickerfest is back for another jam-packed season—this time at Place Centro Cinema on James Street. Making its way around the country, Flickerfest will showcase the very best in award-winning short film, screening hand-picked films broken out into three categories; best Australian shorts, best international and the infamous comedy shorts. This is a must for any film buff, but also just a great excuse for a great night out. Miss at your peril!

Bespoke Queensland Ballet

For three nights only Queensland Ballet are staging an incredible display of the diverse and experimental side to ballet. Taking a step back from the traditional large-scale productions you might expect of the art, this contemporary and intimate performance will question everything you think you know about ballet.

Illicit—An Anti-Valentine’s Party

“We dare you to bring your Tinder date”, is the taunt the event throws out to its patrons. With ten acts of theatre, cabaret, burlesque and performance art, the evening is going to commemorate the day, not a box of chocolates or bunch of roses in sight. Or, at least not conforming to the traditional expectations of either. Show up for a dark underworld of anti-Valentines celebrations, and end the evening with a boogie with a babe.

The Wheel of Love

Okay, maybe you do want to do something romantic this Valentine’s Day, and if that’s the case, more power to you. The Wheel of Brisbane and The Charming Squire are pairing up for the ultimate V-Day date, complete with everything you might need to charm your significant other. Enjoy a two-course meal and sparkling at the South Bank favourite, then finish the evening taking in the beautiful city skyline for sweet treats and more wine. Bliss. Seeing as this is the ultimate date night, tickets aren’t cheap at $244. But, if you think Valentine’s Day is a reason to splurge a little, here’s the chance for something truly special.

By the River with Jazz and Food Trucks

If you like Sunday arvos with sunshine, live music, local brews, and more food trucks than you can shake a taco at, then you need to hustle down to Newstead House for an afternoon of all these good things. This will be a huge cultural affair, with food trucks such as Abbiocco, Gather and Feast , Greek Street Kantina's, India on Wheels, KOMA Sliders, Mac From Way Back, Rolls Pho Mi and more. With Newstead Brewing Co. providing the brew, you’re guaranteed to have a beaut evening.

The Sleeping Beauty

Following a critically acclaimed world premiere and sell-out seasons across the country, David McAllister’s spectacular production of The Sleeping Beauty will premiere in Brisbane on 24th February. Set to Tchaikovsky's sublime score and with gorgeous costumes by Gabriela Tylesova, The Australian Ballet will bring the iconic fairy tale to the stage with all the charm and grace you could hope.

Brisbane Street Art Festival 2017

Street art is alive and thriving and this festival exists to showcase and celebrate the diverse, skilled artists at the forefront. With over 60 artists across more than 30 venues, this festival will feature graffiti art, projections in public spaces, sonic cinema, and plenty of parties.

Mountain Goat Valley Crawl 2017

Last year saw the inaugural Mountain Goat Valley Crawl thrill punters with live acts all through the valley, all for free. It’s back again, this time including The Zoo, The Brightside, The Foundry, Black Bear Lodge and Woolly Mammoth. The line-up is jam-packed with local acts and plenty of frothy bevs. Good music, good bars, and good brews.

Sunday 12th

Brisbane Vegan Markets

In case you haven’t heard the goss, Brisbane is about to get their very first monthly vegan market! Starting this month, Brisbane Vegan Markets will celebrate everything we love about ethical produce and lifestyles. Just a couple of the vendors you can expect to see include Kings Indian Fusion, Fire & Dough, Tapioca Traders, Organic Frog Doughnuts, Chai Cart, Vegan Van, Tibetan Vegan Foods and Popcorn Downunder. You can also get excited for clothing and cosmetic stalls, as well as live music. Score!
