Two Minutes with Christabel Strong

By Elspeth Nielson - 03 Jul 2012

Director of the newly opened, community driven Volumes Gallery in Newstead, Christabel Strong has been one busy lady. We took two with this artistic soul to pick her brain on her fav coffee haunt, New York loves and just what she would be doing if she wasn't "hanging pretty pictures on white walls".

TUL: Describe in one sentence what you do for work?
I hang pretty pictures on white walls and throw events called opening exhibitions in honour of the art, its spectacular glory and its emotive/therapeutic consequences – also for sale.

TUL: What is the most exciting part of your job?
Opening nights! There's always a lot of buzz and beauty. I love how it all comes together for 'showtime'!

TUL: If you weren't working in your profession, what other career would you choose?

There are a lot of other careers that I am interested in, and they're not ruled out yet! A child/adolescent psychologist facilitating psychodrama, running art therapy workshops with kids (I'm actually a counsellor by trade), or an actor, singer and performer - something a bit like Beyonce with the choreographed moves, back up dancers, sequins and a stage!

TUL: Describe your style?

I would say edgy classic with sometimes a rocker biker zing thing going on. I love glamour, bright lips, smokey eyes, edgy bright accessories… and shoes.

TUL: If you were an animal, what would you be?

I think that I would be a black panther - elegant, sleek, full of prowess, resourceful, cautious, calculating and sudden!

TUL: Best way to spend $50?

A sushi train, the movies and a choc top with my boyfriend.

TUL: And the best way to spend $500?

A romantic weekend away.

TUL: 3 great reads?

The Alchemist, To Kill a Mockingbird and Memoirs of a Geisha.

TUL: 3 musicians you couldn't live without?

At the moment, I'm digging Chromeo, Miami Horror. Not to mention the classics of Sade, Tori Amos, Suzanne Vega, Aretha Franklin, Nina Simone, Bob Marley and anyone disco/funk/soul! I can't refine it to 3 musicians, so I've made it 2 musical groups and one big wide genre.

TUL: What was the last song you downloaded?

"You got the Love" – Chaka Khan. It's from the Rags to Rufus album.

TUL: The best gift that you have ever received?

A trip to New York! A collaborative effort from my gorgeous friends for my 30th birthday.

TUL: The best gift that you have ever given?

Unconditional love.

TUL: What would you request for your last meal on earth?

Pate, cacciatore, soft cheeses, olive sourdough bread and red wine.

TUL: Favorite city… other than Brisbane?

New York, but open to more discovery…

TUL: Favorite coffee spot?

Divisione Tecnica in Newstead.

TUL: Favorite restaurant?

Piafor Montrachet.

TUL: Place for a drink?

Lady Lamington

TUL: Shopping destination?

New York.

TUL: Indulgence?

Butter, cream, yummy bread and however I can work those three elements together. For some reason, these are decadent to me.

TUL: Latest Brisbane discovery?

Divisione Tecnica in Newstead and the awesome 'Reuben' at Au Cirque!
