Two Minutes with Graz

By Elspeth Nielson - 12 Jun 2012

Graz Mulcahy is a man of many talents.  As a leading local and international eyewear designer, he has collaborated with the likes of Australian design heavy weights Ellery and Chronicles of Never. Known as a pioneer in his field, he started AM eyewear at the age of 19 and worked on Ksubi's now eponymous eyewear range. Not content with just one industry, he has recently also donned the title of music director for Dubai Fashion Week, Australian Fashion Week and Hong Kong Luxury Week. In town over the weekend to celebrate his line with directional eyewear boutique Optiko we took two minutes with this eyewear guru.

TUL: Describe in one sentence what you do for work?

I apply my attention to the process of design in every aspect. Most of my time is spent doing other peoples jobs and writing emails - most people think I sketch sunglasses shapes all day. I also do music. Make it, play it, organize it, and listen to it a lot.

TUL: What is the most exciting part of your job?

The customers are the most exciting part. The part they play in the whole thing is the most exciting as it's out of your hands, yet a live or die role that they play. Oh and Djing before Prince a few weeks ago.

TUL: If you weren't working in your profession, what other career would you choose?

If I was there and you asked me this question I would tell you. However if I was there then you would not have asked this question….

TUL: Describe your style.

Polite.

TUL: Favourite frame?

Hmm I don't have one in particular. But….. Silhouette Futura's, Gatsby's, GLCO Harding, and the C.P.S. are in the top 10.

TUL: The last thing you purchased?

A Snickers.

TUL: Best way to spend $50?

Buy some records.

TUL: And the best way to spend $500?

Give it away.

TUL: 3 great reads AND musicians you have on high rotation?

This is Your Brain On Music - Daniel J. Levitin

The Brain that Changes itself -  Dr. Norman Doidge

A New Earth - Eckhart Tolle

Amirali - In Time

Gui Boratto - III

Ned Doheny - Prone

TUL: The best gift that you have ever received?

A human body to occupy.

TUL: The best gift that you have ever given?

A pair of my glasses…

TUL: What would you request for your last meal on earth?

Mexican. No question. And ice cream. You could lead me off a cliff with ice cream.

TUL: What is your Sunday routine?

I don't have a routine. The surroundings are constantly changing. Geographical and Social. I love the sunshine. I would like to have that in my routine.

TUL: Favorite city?

NYC - I know it sounds stupid and cliché. Especially for an Aussie. I have some strange love affair with her. I know that if I said something more underground it would be way cooler, but for some reason when I am going over the Brooklyn bridge to Manhattan every time my heart beats faster. She's got something.

TUL: Latest Brisbane discovery?
Laruche. Where I am playing after my event on the 9th of June with Das Moth and Tim Fuchs. Come and say Hi!. I'll be wearing all grey.
