There are many things at The Urban List HQ that we enjoy immensely: burgers (of course), long walks in the park, pugs—you catch our drift. But if there’s one annual celebration we really love to get behind (apart from a visit from Saint Nick), it’s Easter.

Back for the 4th year in a row and armed with all the Pepe Saya butter we could get our hands on, we’ve rounded up, toasted and tasted the very best hot cross buns in Brisbane. Yes, the job we do is tough, but how else will you know which bun is best?

So here it is Brisbane, our picks of the best hot cross buns in Brisbane. Stock up and eat up!

Jocelyn’s Provisions | Staff Pick

Brisbane's best hot cross buns, best bakeries Brisbane

Is there anything Jocelyn’s doesn’t do well? The answer is a hard no. Joce’s hot cross buns were the perfect love child of fruity: spicy, pillowy: moist ratios. After the ideal balance of not too fruity, not too spicy and neither too dense nor to fluffy? This is your bun bake.

Banneton

Brisbane's best hot cross buns, best bakeries Brisbane

Famed for their incredible sourdough breads and perfect macarons, Banneton knows a thing or two about baking, and yes, they are certainly up there as producing one of Brisbane’s best hot cross buns! Full of fruit and the perfect balance between pillowy and moist, these beauts are perfect for toasting.

Chouquette

Brisbane's best hot cross buns, best bakeries Brisbane

We’ve said it once and we’ll say it again; Chouquette slays in the Brisbane baking world (seriously, try the madeleines). And, just as predicted, their take on the humble hot cross bun is a total winner. Using a pain au lait dough as their base, Chouquette’s buns have a beautiful, gentle spice to them (thanks to the inclusion of confit ginger)—fancy!

Flour & Chocolate

Brisbane's best hot cross buns, best bakeries Brisbane

Flour & Chocolate are so well known, northsiders are willing to drive across the river for their incredible pastries—unheard of! Their hot cross buns are perfectly soft and fluffy with just enough fruit. Pop them in the toaster and slather with some butter for an Easter treat (or breakfast every day for the next two weeks if you’re us).

Sol Breads

Brisbane's best hot cross buns, best bakeries Brisbane

Champions of the organic baking world, Sol Bread is all about traditional methods for incredible flavour. So it makes sense that their hot cross buns would of course fly that flag! With a dense dough (which by the way is ideal for that golden crunch fresh out the toaster) and a slightly spicy edge, a half dozen of these wouldn’t last a minute. Better pick up a dozen…

Crust & Co.

Brisbane's best hot cross buns, best bakeries Brisbane

If we know one thing, Crust & Co. never do anything unless it’s done perfectly. So, of course this year they produced the prettiest most gorgeous ‘Festive Easter Wreath’. Designed to be torn and shared, don’t let this bun wreath’s looks fool you; it’s pillowy-like bread with a beautiful fruit-to-spice ratio is dangerously good. So good you’ll likely eat the whole thing by yourself…

Cake & Bake

Brisbane's best hot cross buns, best bakeries Brisbane

Tucked away in West End, Cake & Bake make some of the best damn tarts and cakes in this town. Their 2017 hot cross bun is fluffy, fruity and the perfect snack size for pre and post Easter egg demolishing. Enough said.

This year, a couple of ‘wild card’ entries had us in lust at first bite. Not much gets us as flustered as a pastry/cake/mash up, so be sure to add these to your to-eat list.

Flour & Chocolate’s Black Forest Hot Cross Buns

Brisbane's best hot cross buns, best bakeries Brisbane

Personally, I live for chocolate in anything so clearly I am bias, but, whatever. It’s Easter. And, in the spirit of Easter the genius bakers over at Flour & Chocolate have created the perfect fluffy, fruity, chocolate-y combo that is a black forest hot cross bun. Adhering to the bones of a traditional HCB but jazzed up for the 2017 consumer (everyone, then) these decadent buns are well worth stocking up on. We are not worthy!

Nodo Donuts Hot Cross Bun Doughnuts

Brisbane's best hot cross buns, best bakeries Brisbane

Frequented more than we’d like to admit (okay, at least twice a week!) we were always going to be tempted by the sounds of Nodo’s hot cross doughnut. Looks like a doughnut, tastes like a hot cross bun, it really toys with your emotions. In a really, really good way. Nodo, if you kept these on the menu all year round, we’d love you forever.

Need more than a quick sweet fix? Here's 10 insane brisbane burgers to sink your teeth into.
