This coming Monday morning Australia’s timezone will coincide with the United States’ holiest of non-holidays, Super Bowl Sunday. Better known by most Australians as the only time a year we drink Budweisers, we oftentimes struggle to appreciate the deft manoeuvres and rippling athleticism of the astro-turfed pageant known as NFL. But are we going to let a little bemusement stop us from having a good time? Never.
Super Bowl LI sees the Atlanta Falcons coming up against former champions, the New England Patriots in what promises to be an all-out glorious, star spangled bannered skirmish—Lady Gaga is performing at half time, so there's that, too— and Brisbane is bristling with excitement.
Gather round, my Yankee dudes and dandies, here’s where we’ll be celebrating the Super Bowl in Brisbane.
The Fox Hotel
Thank the time difference and the Fox Hotel’s liquor license for a sweet, sweet chance to start your day with a bucket of Budweisers. Coverage begins at 9.30am, live and loud in crystalline HD, and there’ll be loads of munch to line your stomach (best value is the kilo of wings for just $10). Doors open at 8.30am but you can secure your place here.
Throwing open their doors at 8am, Buffalo Bar is serving up an American breakfast of champions until 11am, along with plenty of American brews for this year’s Super Bowl 2017 bash. There’ll also be a tonne of games, sweeps and prizes to keep you pumped throughout the game, just make sure you call and book to avoid missing out.
Given that New York hasn’t been to the Super Bowl since the Giants went four years ago, Red Hook’s bringing the Super Bowl to Brisbane’s own shard of NYC. To go alongside the live coverage from 9.30am, Red Hook will be serving breakfast burgers, morning beers, and their own iteration of a Bloody Mary.
This Super Bowl season Finn McCools has all the parts necessary to assemble maximum Uncle Sam funtimes: the biggest game of the season blaring on the big screens, American snackage, Buds (naturally), and a fairly hectic hottest chicken wing challenge after the game—that metallic clatter you just heard was the sound of a gauntlet being thrown down.
Now that Brooklyn Standard’s doing food (prayers = answered!), it would be positively criminal not to throw a Super Bowl shindig wouldn’t it? Their freshly minted menu is a perfect accompaniment to the bright and thunderous field action we’re anticipating with classics like cheeseburgers, hot dogs, mozzarella sticks, jalapeño poppers and onion rings. Doors from 9am, coverage from 9.30am, and drinks from 10am.
The Defiant Duck
Super Bowl LI at The Defiant Duck is gearing to go off like pyrotechnics on July 4. Along with the standard Bud buckets, American feastings, and promises of extravagant headwear at the half-time show courtesy of Lady Gaga, The Defiant Duck is also offering $1 wings all day #value. Broadcast starts at 9.30am, but you could always turn up early for some java at the express window.
The Flying Cock
The Flying Cock entertains no illusions surrounding the Super Bowl; they know you’re just here for the American style mega-brunch, and boy have they pulled out the stops. Think mac ‘n cheese sticks, fries, wings, and a Big Tank Johnson brekky burger. Seats are strictly limited to make sure you book a table at [email protected]
We're assuming you'll be kicking on after the game: here's our picks of Brisbane's best rooftop bars to keep the party atmos going.
