There's something about cold weather that makes us seek out comfort foods; indulging in a plate of something warm and delicious, when it's a bit chilly outside, is deeply satisfying. And there are few things more comforting than a great roast chicken – I'm thinking tasty, juicy meat encased in a crispy skin, with veggies and lashings of sauce.

Given the change of season and our official entry into Winter 2012, we've scoped out the best places to get your next chook fix.

Tartufo
Wander down to Emporium to try out the whole organic spatchcock seasoned with black pepper at Tartufo. Served with mashed potato and finished with lemon, parsley and extra virgin olive oil, this fits the comfort-food brief perfectly.
Where: Emporium, 1000 Ann St, Fortitude Valley Qld

Watt Restaurant + Bar
Keen to enjoy an uninterrupted river view with your bird (ha!)? Make tracks to Watt for their roasted spatchcock with tomato rice and pickled cucumber salad - a lighter chicken dinner.
Where: 119 Lamington St, New Farm Qld
Contact: 07 3358 5464

Montrachet
It could be argued that no one does chicken better than the French, and when you combine that with the formidable reputation of Paddington-favourite, Montrachet, it's a good bet that you're in for a treat. On the menu is a baby chicken, with a fricassée of chorizo, onion, potato, peppers and tomato on wilted spinach.
Where: 224 Given Tce, Paddington Qld

Il Centro
Another Brisbane classic, Il Centro, is currently dishing up their marinated free-range chicken breast with semolina gnocchi and sautéed speck, brussel sprout and pea ragout. Yum. Yum.
Where: Eagle Street Pier, 1 Eagle Street, Brisbane Qld

James St Cooking School
Want to have a crack at making your own chicken feast? James St Cooking School is offering a Gourmet Chicken class, equipping punters with all the techniques to produce a top-notch bird at home.  Cook it, eat it, and then wash it down with a glass (or two) of wine. Winner.
