Chunky knitwear is a vibe this winter. Nothing says cosy quite like a cardigan that resembles a fluffy, woolen blanket or a straight-up tea-cosy—and look, following the chaos of 2020, these adorable knits are the warm grandma-esque hug we all need as the temperature drops.
Maybe you’ve been inspired by all the cable knits in Normal People, maybe you’ve been dipping your toe into the ocean of the internet’s new introvert-friendly hashtag, “#cottagecore”. Where ever you’re at, chunky knits are in and these homey but stylish beauties have caught our eye.
Beautiful handwoven, last-forever knits tend to cost a pretty penny, especially if they're made from 100 percent wool. If it’s the style, colour or cut you’re keen on—we recommend downloading the amazing Trendii app or Chrome Extension. Once you do, you’ll be able to suss similar styles across a big range of prices, plus earn cashback rewards—how good. More on how that all works that here.
For now, here are some of our fave chunky knit sweaters.
The Knitter Buttercup Sweater
We are a little bit obsessed with this chunky knit label from New Zealand. Buttercup is made from super soft, cruelty-free Mohair and woven by hand—this woolly number is a treasure to be kept forever. Our fave hue is this dreamy mint, but you can also shop it in lilac, blue and yellow.
Frisson Knits Cropped Sweater
Frisson Knits is another woolly wonder from NZ (side note: why is NZ so good at fashion?). This cropped tangerine beauty is light enough to be trans-seasonal, made from kid mohair and made by hand too.
Wolfgang Scout Wandering Cable Knit
Wolfgang Scout popped onto the scene in April 2019. Sustainability is the focus of this label, so while it's definitely pricey, you can rest assured the money you splash on this canteloupe-hued knit isn't harming people or the planet. Described as “earth, people and animal-friendly”, each one of Wolfgang Scout's plush jumpers is hand-knitted at a small female-run factory in India that only employs female artisans and offers education and above-average wages.
I Love Mister Mittens Diamond Cable Knit
Sustainability is also key at Antwerp-based knitwear label Mr Mittens. This keepsake jumper has been spun by a community of female Peruvian artisans and we love it bright cobalt or striking indigo. Plus it's on sale!
Kowtow Gingham Sweater
This boxy fit jumper from Kowtow is a blend of New Zealand wool, mohair and alpaca. The gingham pattern is a stand-the-test-of-time classic too.
Aje Rebellion Chunky Knit Jumper
A classic piece in a classic berry hue from Aussie label Aje. This chunky knit is a wool blend, with superfine alpaca thrown in the mix.
St Agni Gael Jumper
