Where To Find The Best Diet-ditching Desserts On The Coast

By Stephanie Newsham - 08 May 2016

Here at Metropolist, we like to think we’re pretty healthy. *cough*

We eat superfoods and go on painful runs. We know it’s probably best not to eat chocolate for breakfast and that daily fruit is generally a good idea. Life is about balance though and, sometimes, you want to tip those scales (figuratively and literally) and stuff your face with as many delicious calories as you can.

If you feel like treating yourself (which we sometimes, okay often, do), we’ve got you covered and can point you in many different directions as you ditch that diet and devour some of the best desserts on the Gold Coast. Amen.

Ze Pickle | Oreogazm

The three legendary local lads from Burleigh’s fave burger joint, Ze Pickle have already got us covered when it comes to drool-worthy burgers (Fried cheese sticks on a burger? All hail ZP!). What you might not know though (because you’re always too full), is that there’s one particularly bangin’ dessert on their menu. Everyone is pretty fond of Oreos, right? Okay, how about deep frying them in doughnut batter and serving with toffee caramel ice cream and liquid Nutella. This is definitely one dessert worth saving room for.

Gemelli | Nutella Bomba

We think we’ve made our opinion about Gemelli clear, as one of our absolute favourites that can really do no wrong. So, is it any surprise that together with some of the best pizza and pasta around, these boys also serve up some of the best desserts on the Gold Coast? Absolutely not! One dish particularly close to our hearts is the delectable Nutella Bomba. Think: melt-in-your-mouth, deep-fried Sicilian pastry, equal parts soft and crispy (sorcery!), and filled with oozing Nutella. It’s probably big enough to share, but you definitely will not want to.

Gelato Messina | Ice cream

There was much talk when this beloved gelato institution (seven stores in Sydney, three in Melbourne, and one in Vegas, baby!) opened its first Queensland location in Coolangatta last year, and for good reason. The ice cream wizards at Gelato Messina offer a permanent range of incredible flavours such as Apple Pie (apple gelato with house-made apple pie throughout); Salted Caramel and White Chocolate; and Italian Nougat (honey gelato with roasted nuts and nougat). Each week five specials are made, so keep an eye on their Insta/Facebook/Twitter for the inside info. Shout-out to the super accommodating staff, who always let us annoyingly try seven flavours before making the final pick. Thanks team!

Betty’s Burgers | Concrete

Once you’ve polished off your tasty Betty’s burger/fries/beer, you best start contemplating the contents of your Concrete. Enter Betty’s signature frozen custard ice cream, blended with your choice of incredible mix-ins. You can choose between Betty’s tried and true combos like the Mint Choc Fudge Brownie (chocolate custard, brownie chunks, mint cookies, and chocolate fudge sauce), or if you think you’ve got what it takes, design your own with mix-ins such as caramel popcorn, marshmallow sauce, sticky date pudding, and choc-coated espresso beans on offer. Good news is there are no limit on mix-ins. Sure, your Concrete might cost you a pretty penny but we reckon it’ll be one of the tastiest things you ever spent all your pretty pennies on!

NightQuarter | World Famous Funnel Cakes

It’s certainly no easy task picking a favourite dessert at the fantastic NightQuarter markets, but World Famous Funnel Cakes are definitely up there. These delicious doughnut/churro/waffle hybrids are topped with ice cream and all matter of tasty toppings, such as warm caramel fudge and salted caramel brittle, and are served up by dancing staff a la vintage cabaret parlour. If we were super cheesy we’d say something like “They put the FUN in funnel cakes!” We won’t though. Even though it’s totally true.

Where: 1 Town Centre Drive, Helensvale

Longboards | Oreo Brownie Stack

Sprawled around the gorgeous pool, at the foot of the towering Q1 Hotel, Longboards is a firm favourite when it comes to burgers on the Gold Coast (insider tip: the Mini Phat will complete you). Unsurprisingly, this team knows delish desserts as well as burgers. Case in point, the Oreo Brownie Stack: Oreo and peanut butter brownie cakes, caramel fudge sauce, Movenpick caramel fudge ice cream and Oreo wafer biscuits. Uh, yes please. Any dessert described as a “stack” gets our tick of approval.

Doughnut Time | Doughnuts and shakes

The doughnut craze is still going strong around these parts, thanks to players like Doughnut Time, who have supplied us with some of the best desserts on the Gold Coast. With a constantly changing menu, you’ll want to get yourself down to Mermaid on the regular to sample such creations as the cinnamon sugar-dusted, Nutella-filled Love at First Bite or the Back for Smore: chocolate and custard-filled, topped with chocolate glaze, crushed biscuits, and toasted marshmallows. Drool. Pretty sure though, when Homer Simpson sold his soul to the devil for a doughnut, it was Doughnut Time’s Original Glazed—simple and goddamned perfect.

Where: 5/2375 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach

Bazaar | Dessert Buffet

We don’t know about you, but when we eat dessert we love when the options go overboard with a ridiculous amount of choices. What better place to find this than at a buffet. Or to be more specific, what better buffet than Bazaar at the effortlessly cool hotel, QT Gold Coast. Some of the best desserts on the Gold Coast can be found in the interactive marketplace and include a dizzying array of the sweetest little tarts, cakes, puddings, and macarons you ever did see. There’s also an ice cream mix-in station to make you feel like a kid in a candy store who gets to add that candy to ice cream. Score!
