If we needed further proof that we live in the best city in the world, this past long weekend was it. And it wasn’t just the stunning weather or three-day beach benders that sealed the deal. No, it was our award-winning breweries with Balter, Black Hops and Burleigh Brewing Co, all scoring spots in the GABS Hottest 100 Craft Beers of the Year.
The infamous national beer contest, saw over 31,000 people placing more than 155,000 votes—and three Gold Coast breweries made the cut with a whopping 11 brews among them.
Currumbin’s Balter Brewing took out the coveted number one spot for the second year in a row with their XPA Pale Ale.
Not content just taking out the number one position, Balter also scored 6th and 7th on the list with newbie IIPA and their American IPA. Their 2018 new release mid-strength beer, Captain Sensible, tapped in at number 19, while their Strong Pale Ale (24th) and Pilsner (65th) rounded out a hugely successful year for Mick Fanning and his crew.
Another of our faves, Black Hops, once again proved they’ve got the goods with an impressive three brews on the list. Their popular Pale Ale nabbed 14th position while, Hornet, an American IPA, took out 43rd position. Super Hornet, an Imperial IPA came in at the 88th spot. Not bad at all for a brewery that has only been on the scene for three years.
Rounding out the list are the legends at Burleigh Brewing Co. Their Australian Pale Ale, Twisted Palm, grabbed the 48th spot, while their no carb Pale Lager, Bighead came in the 71st position. We’ll drink to that!
If you’re getting thirsty just reading about all this beer, clear the schedule and make some time to drop in to each brewery and taste-test these award-winning drops.
