Gin lovers of the Gold Coast, your festive season is about to get a helluva lot jollier with today’s announcement that Broadbeach is preparing to welcome a stylin’ fine dining restaurant and bar dedicated to all things gin, just in time for Christmas!
Long gone are the days that gin was only your grandma’s or pommy mate’s drink of choice—now it’s become an adored staple that can be enjoyed straight up or the star ingredient in many a finely-crafted gin cocktail. Which is why we know this news will be sweet music to the ears of the Coast’s existing and new generation of gin fans.
With works underway throughout spring, owner Gavin McDougal and the team have somehow managed to keep the cat firmly tucked in the bag, until now. Old Tom Restaurant and Bar is soon to be the latest addition to the Coast’s bourgeoning foodie scene, with decor details including a public house-style façade to fit with the era, a plush dining room, marble flooring, plus a lounge and library lined with old English classic books. Swoon.
And the name? During United Kingdom’s 18th-century prohibition era, we're told public houses displayed a carving of a tomcat out front, indicating that patrons could fulfill their thirst for gin inside without being slapped with the government’s excessive tax on the spirit.
On track to open next week, we were impressed to learn that Tom Angel, one of the Coast’s most respected mixologists and amongst the top 100 bartenders in the country, will be fronting the gin bar and gracefully whipping up features such as the ‘Black’ Collins, a stellar twist on the classic Tom Collins and a Tanqueray 10 martini, concocted directly from an old-fashioned martini trolley.
Together with chef Dayan Hartill-Law, who comes with multiple chef hats under his belt and a 16-year career working alongside the likes of Peter Gilmore, Heston Blumenthal and Mastertchef host, George Colombaris. Undoubtedly a whizz in the kitchen, Dayan will be serving refined three, six and nine-course menus in the dining room, with a relaxed share plate and bar snack offering in the lounge and library.
Set to officially open to the public on Thursday 23 November, Gold Coast foodies and gin connoisseurs alike are invited to join the pre-opening festivities on the Wednesday evening prior, with tickets now on sale to an exclusive five-course gin dinner with Four Pillars. Tickets are $135 per person and can be booked via email@example.com.
And of course, you can anticipate we’ll be back next week with your first sneaky peek inside Old Tom. We’re intrigued as you are to get a looksee at this one!
