Whether you are heading to Auckland from afar in search of a beachside, inner-city, six-bedroom pad for a dazzling big city adventure or, like us you love nothing more than the appeal of slowing things down to appreciate local delights right here on our proverbial doorstep—cue the staycation, no long lines at the airport, this time thanks very much. Either way, Airbnb is a great place to start your search. As the site itself announces “Airbnb will soon be booking more rooms than the world’s largest hotel chains” We figured we’d better take a look at some of the best Auckland has to offer.
#1 Mid-Century Magic
DOCOMOMO lists the “Brake-House” among New Zealand’s top 20 modern buildings, sites and neighborhoods. And we can see why—floating in the bush-clad Waitakere ranges, its pavilions of glass are nothing short of an oasis in the rainforest—Albeit a rainforest that’s a handy 30-minute drive from downtown Auckland.
Head to the DECO Eatery café for Middle Eastern fare—Turkish Eggs, Turkish Mezze, Turkish flat bread. Turkish anything.
#2 The Converted Warehouse
Once a mechanics workshop, this converted Ponsonby warehouse boasts an industrial feel, with exposed beams, brick walls and external areas tumbling with Jasmin adorning the alfresco dining area. It’s also a very handy hop, skip and a drink away from the Ponsonby Road watering holes.
Walk up to Ripe Deli for a coconut green smoothie—guaranteed to leave you feeling virtuous before you hit the town.
#3 The City Fringe Townhouse
Heading to Auckland to take in a game? This renovated modern townhouse is walking distance from Eden Park and sleeps many, well seven to be exact. And, if you are game enough (pardon the pun) to bring the kids, it’s family friendly too.
Assuming you are heading to a game “en mass”— hit up the The Dominion for some tasty bites before the match.
#4 Costal Luxury Escape
After something pretty spesh? Look no further. This Oneroa based, Italian limestone beach house is calling your name. The spa pool, the outdoor fireplace and the 360 degree views are just a few of the perks this sweet home boasts. Did I mention private beach access? This one speaks for itself, so get your rock and roll on and go see for yourself.
Do not miss Mudbrick Restaurant and Vineyard for spectacular food, wine and views.
#5 The Wild Wild West
This immaculacy kept small Piha lodge is not lacking in charm. Nestled back into the bush behind the owner’s property, it stands discreetly amongst the ferns, and is in walking distance to the surf. The hosts are a real hoot too.
Head to The Piha Café for extra cheesy pizzas and cold beer by the sea.
#6 The Inner-City Loft
If you are after value for money, this one bedroom, two bed loft has your name all over it. Centrally located, the brick exposed walls and sash windows are a little bit of Manhattan in inner city Auckland.
#7 Northside Cottage Stay
Want to leave the hustle of central Auckland behind? Head to Devonport for a B &B garden stay. Located just a few blocks from Cheltenham Beach, it has polished floorboards, steepled ceilings, super- comfy beds, a claw-foot bath ( bubble bath included) and Netflix.
Go get your supplies (and coffee) from The Cheltenham Dairy & Milk Bar
#8 CBD Apartment
This well-appointed waterfront inner city pad will land you right in the middle of central Auckland—and really, what better spot could there be?
If you get tired of sitting and watching the boats come in from your seat on the balcony, burn on up to The Fed for some bottomless coffee in true old school NYC Jewish deli styles.
#9 The Herne Bay Villa
Want to stay where the well-heeled reside? Then this typically Auckland traditional villa should do the trick. White, light and airy and close enough to walk up to Jervois Road for some shopping, eating or drinking.
Check out The Poi Room to stock up on uniquely Kiwi art, décor and jewellery. .
#10 The Lakefront Retreat
A plunge pool set into a deck with lake views out over Tapakuna, and four separate outdoor entertaining areas. The only thing that might draw us indoors is the very plush master bedroom and ensuite.
Don’t miss the Tapakuna Beach Café – The views will make you forget your food—Well almost, the gelato here is seriously fine.
