Good style costs nothing, guys. If you’re keen to get amongst the buzz at Melbourne Fashion Week (31 Aug – 7 Sep), but don’t have cash to splash, we’ve got you covered. Keep reading for some of our free event suggestions.
Fashion's Night Out
First, if you’re looking to spend a little (just a lil, we promise), Fashion Week will open with Vogue American Express Fashion’s Night Out. It's on every year, and there's usually hundreds of retailers dishing up exclusive offers and experiences. It kicks off at 10am 31 August and wraps at 10pm the following day. Get into the city and treat ‘yo self. Entry is free (even if the goods ain't)
The Fashion Capsules
Okay, now let’s get to the free stuff. The Fashion Capsules are presented by Creative Victoria—they're a series of six exhibition capsules, displaying work from Victorian fashion artists, designers, filmmakers and jewellers. They’re scattered throughout the city, so make a day of it and explore everything Melbourne has to offer. You can check out the full line-up here.
Alexander McQueen Doco
Alexander McQueen’s work was rebellious and revolutionary, and his impact on the fashion industry has been told through an incredible doco, MCQUEEN. Palace Cinema Kino will be hosting a FREE event, screening the documentary and celebrating a true icon of the industry. It's on Tuesday 4 September.
Student Designer Showcase
The RMIT Student Designer Showcase will explore various methods and approaches to fashion through interactive making sessions, performances and fashion films. It's always a cracker. Displaying works of third-year students from the uni's Bachelor of fashion (Design) (Honours) program, the showcase acts as a fantastic platform for emerging Aussie talent. It's also 100% free.
Free Street Runway Shows
There are going to be three FREE Street Runways running throughout the week. Runway One will display collections from some of the city’s most recognised retailers, live on the streets of Melbourne. Runway Two is set to highlight Melbourne’s multicultural and sustainable identity—good old Union Lane will act as a backdrop. And finally Runway Three, DO NOT MISS: Section 8 is set to go off, not only with some of Australia’s independent and emerging labels, but also a DJ-powered after party. We're keen.
Roving Fashion Pop-Ups
Guys, so many pop-ups are coming, and roving models will display a whole host of designers and looks. Think Collins, Street Wear, Ready-to-wear, Laneways, Carlton (stay with me guys) Docklands, Fed Square and Menswear. I’ll let you wrap your head around those in your own time.
Alchemy At Alpha60
Alpha60 and Monash Uni's Department of Materials Science and Engineering are partnering and hosting Alchemy, a free event where you can create your own piece of jewellery. Alpha60’s store at Chapter House will host the evening and it's free to join in. It is first-in-best-dressed though, so don’t be late. Pieces will also be on display throughout the week, so drop by and check them out for some inspo.
Well guys, that ought to keep you busy. Get out there and get involved. All the info you need on MFW is over here.
