Step Inside The Vibrant Footscray Café That Has Taken Over The Lonely Planet Publishing Warehouse

If The Dream Factory in Footscray had a resume, it’d be a long one. Dating back to the 1800’s, it was previously a rubber factory, a cotton mill and a warehouse complex where many raves took place. It was also once the official headquarters of travel publisher, Lonely Planet.

Now, Sam and Celeste Gant are carrying on the venue’s legacy with Gathered, an all-day breakfast and lunch café which opened earlier this year in September.

Gathered also shares The Dream Factory venue with a co-working space for businesses in design, emerging technologies and positive social impact.

When you walk into Gathered, you’ll be blown away at the beauty of the space. It’s vibrant, refreshing, uplifting and especially easy to forget that the warehouse has an industrial past. It’s also the kind of café where you’ll feel like you’re doing a good deed just by being there.

One of the main reasons for that comes from the fact that the Gathered menu is all about local, seasonal, free range produce that’s also organic where ever possible. So consuming at Gathered means that you’re playing a part in supporting small sustainable farms, communities and producers.

Due to the heritage of the building, Gathered has a very small kitchen, but don’t let that fool you, because the meals being dished up are big on flavour.

The all day menu selection ranges between breakfast and lunch, with staples including a mean bacon and egg roll (simple, yet very effective) and a granola dish with fresh seasonal fruit, elderflower coyo and buckwheat crunch.

If you’re in the mood for lunch, there’s options like the crispy rice with lamb belly, pickled cucumber ribbons and yoghurt, or the crispy kale with black rice  with cece pepe foam and poached eggs.

And if you decide to keep your order minimal, we recommend going sunny side up to get some of the most perfectly cooked eggs in Melbourne.

Off the menu there’s additional options including daily specials like sandwiches, salads and top quality pastries, all of which may be among the first things to catch your eye when you first walk in. Bread and pastries are supplied by Noisette and they also stock decadently good brownies from Box Brownies.

There’s also a boardroom facility available for hire at Gathered. Sam says, “We own a catering and events business, Pot & Pan Culinary Tailoring, so we understand the importance of events and helping people have privacy if need be.”
