Kong BBQ Gets A New Northside Sibling

Baby, pick your Chin Chin up from the floor: there’s going to be a new Kong BBQ from the stellar team at the Lucas Group in the food mecca of Fitzroy.

Aiming to open early next year, the new Smith Street venue will also welcome a fresh head chef, Kitak Lee. With experience at international icon Momofuku and Sydney’s Cho Cho San, this young gun packs some heavy experience under his belt.

Between Kong’s sleek twists of Japanese cuisine and Lee’s impressive expertise, the menu is looking to be one of the most dynamic yet for the Lucas Group.

Old favourites from the original BBQ joint make an appearance, but the new space will go in a different direction, with a stronger Japanese influence and innovative outlook. Think wood-fired scallops, tuna tataki, and crispy Sashimi Shells (don’t worry, they’ll still have the Korean Fried Wings).

The new team has already been getting busy under the covers, with the King Korean K-Sandwich launched with UberEats in November, and a new line of dumplings, including crunchy fried pork dumplings with butter ponzu, under construction.

The restaurant will be offering both dine-in and takeaway options, with house-made ramen, dumplings, and buns available all day and all night. The sleek new setting is also only one of the projects Lucas has in the works, so make sure to watch this space.
