You know the Melbourne weather’s started to turn when the rooftop cinemas emerge from hibernation and unleash their summer session programs. Dunno about you, but it’s our favourite time of the year.
The Lido’s rooftop is back for its third year running, and the new program is looking (frankly) all kinds of awesome.
There’s the new releases of course: Justice League (16 Nov), Call Me By Your Name (Boxing Day) and the sardonic black comedy Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri (if you haven’t seen the trailer for this, do yourself a favour).
Personally though, we reckon rooftop cinemas are all about the VHS classics. And this year Lido is rereleasing a Cult Calendar, chock-a-block with your favourite childhood flicks. Think Goonies, Empire Records (Damn the man! Save the Empire!), the head-bopping A Night At The Roxbury and Garden State). And if you’re too young to remember those, you have no business watching movies.
Interestingly, the Lido is also unveiling a new program of, quote-unquote “erotic thrillers”. Basically all the movies you never want to watch with your parents: Eyes Wide Shut, Wild Orchid and Fatal Attraction, and so on.
Need a kicker? How about a screening of Labyrinth on David Bowie’s birthday (8 Jan) or the first Australian screening of the brand new Star Wars: The Last Jedi (12:01AM on 14 December).
Told you it was a cracker.
