While fashion week can feel daunting for the sartorially challenged, there are a bunch of activities and events you can get around without having a glam squad on hand. With the Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival only a mere month away, we’ve rounded up the best hidden activities and events for you to experience this coming festival.

Fashion Writing Series Workshop

Love to write? This one’s for you.

An all-day intensive workshop with a panel of experts from the Australian fashion writing sector. Known to include an array of Editorial contributors, Editors, entrepreneurs and creative directors, there’ll be an insightful exploration of all things grammar, style and how to be a boss in the industry, basically. Last year saw great success with influential writers from top Australian magazines, digital platforms and young entrepreneurs kicking ass in the publishing sector. Business Breakfast

Rub shoulders and eat toast with some of the best in the fashion business. The business breakfast caters to those who value networking, industry insights and the most important meal of the day. While this event is a little more wallet-heavy, the international guest lineup is hard to turn down. The conversation begins with Designer and Entrepreneur, Cynthia Rowley (USA), as well as Adidas Originals Global Category Director, Rachel Muscat (Germany). Glynis Traill-Nash, Fashion Editor of The Australian will kick off the event with her hosting skills. You'll be sure to leave the morning with more than a full stomach. Find out more info here.

Fashion Film Series Screening

Boasting both local and global talent, the Fashion Film Series platform is one of the best in Australia for exposure and recognition of talent across the fashion film industry. Pull up a deck chair and grab some popcorn for VAMFF’s free screening in Fed Square.

Combining filmmakers and fashion, the series focuses on communicating fashion with creative flair and innovation for an audience experience like no other. Out of hundreds of submissions from emerging and established filmmakers, a final selection of six Australian, and four international films have been selected for our viewing.

Look out for some mesmerising Melbourne-grown talent on the screen. Among the selection is a heavenly—yet fierce—film directed by one-to-watch Arielle Thomas, of Cinema Thom alongside an incredible local duo of creative talent from Good Grief Productions – It’s the kind of grief you want in your life. Fashion Industry Forum

Across two forums, this intimate panel setting offers you a look into the business side of fashion. Proving fashion is far more than just the glitz and glam, this behind the scenes look at a forever evolving and churning juggernaut shares important discourses surrounding industry innovations.

The panellists are yet to be announced, but going by last year’s illustrious selection this is one not to miss. Keep an eye on any announcements here.

Anthropocene Exhibition

Past and present RMIT students explore the relationship between fashion and geology in this impressive exhibition. On display will be works examining the new geological era, and the implications for design, textiles, art and fashion disciplines. Discourses focus on the future and this new era of fashion and are sure to bring some alternative thoughts to fashion processes.
