Yes, that’s right, a list of Melbourne’s best gluten-free pizzas. Bet all you sceptics out there never thought you’d see the day we’d be happily enjoying and recommending good GF pizzas, did you?
We aren’t going to pretend it hasn’t been a struggle to get to this point; we’ve all had to eat our way through our fair share of bad bases right? But these restaurants have absolutely nailed it and given GF’ers a slice of pizza that softens the blow of missing out on the real deal.
Oh baby, do they know their way around a pizza oven. I promise you the food is a hell of a lot better than that opening line, with their perfectly thin and crispy bases and seasonal menu you’ll think it’s too good to be true. But don’t worry they’re not tricking you, it’s definitely GF and it’s pretty damn delicious.
Fitzroy & Prahran
You can’t find much fault with these guys and their traditional style pizzas, keeping customers happy with restaurants in the North and South. They have a great reputation for providing options for all preferences (especially gluten free) by cooking their bases in a separate area in the kitchen. So you’re definitely onto a tasty winner with these slices of goodness. Just make sure someone orders the J Lo, trust us.
If you can’t handle gluten but you can’t handle missing out on a good old slice then head on down to The Banff in St Kilda, it’s cosy laid back atmosphere makes it’s the perfect place to settle down to enjoy a pizza especially if you get there for their pizza happy hour $6 every day.
Started by 6 Italians, you’ve got to feel pretty confident that these guys know what they’re talking about - if the result isn’t a killer pizza then something’s gone seriously wrong. Thankfully there’s a reason this restaurant continuously tops lists. With a real authentic pizzeria feel and atmosphere, don’t even think about sharing one. That’ll be one order of the namesake pizza +39 for me, anyone else?
The guys at Pizza Farro are breaking away from the norm and use a 100% spelt flour for their standard pizza bases. Low in gluten, spelt is a much healthier option compared to wheat bases. Whilst this itself isn’t completely gluten free, the team pride themselves on making award winning GF pizza bases fresh every day, topped with ingredients sourced from companies who use only GF ingredients. I think we are onto a bit of a winner here.
The OG for the health conscious and dietary affected, what would a GF list be without this institution making a feature? And with good reason! Their pizzas need no introduction, all are available GF and whilst there might only be 5 to choose from, I can assure you it’s no easy decision. When in doubt, the Funghi Arrosto is as tasty as it sounds, plus you don’t feel as bad eating a whole pizza to yourself from here - it’s all healthy right?
