Melbourne’s favourite winter market has kicked off in style—and we popped along to bring you a guide to everything you need to buy and try this season. Everything about the Queen Vic Winter Night Market is pretty epic, but we’ve narrowed it down to a list of eight of the best!
The Open Fires
Yep, open fires, people! Like, actual, real fires that you can huddle around and pretend that you totally lit yourself. Best enjoyed with a hot beverage (see point 3) and a gaggle of friends.
Cheese platters are one of life’s great pleasures, and thanks to The Sippery (in the south eastern corner of the shed), cheese platters are readily available. We recommend you go the whole hog and get a little of everything—but in particular there’s mozzarella that’s been wrapped in grape skins and olive leaves and aged for six months that really shouldn’t be missed. Grab a glass of Robert Oatley wine while you’re at it.
Delicious Hot Drinks
You’ve got a few great options here, but our top picks are mulled wine or hot (non alcoholic) apple cider from Those Girls. Mulled wine needs no introduction, but can we just say that the apple cider really is heaven in a cup. It’s like drinking a lightly spiced apple cake. It’s completely divine.
Next Level Pasta
They’re not mucking around when it comes to the hearty comfort food at the Winter Night Market. Our pick of the bunch is an epic bowl of pasta from That's Amore Cheese. Basically, there’s a huge wheel of parmesan cheese with a hole scooped out from the centre—your serving of pasta is tossed around in the parmesan, so that the wheel slowly melts and coats your dinner with... All. The. Cheese.
Bao Bun Fun
Fluffy bao buns, filled with drool-worthy meats, herbs and sauces are the perfect belly-warming winter food. If there’s a bit of a queue, stick with it; the service is speedy and they’re worth the wait.
Food You’ve Probably Never Tried Before
There’s an excellent stand of genuine Aussie Bush Tucker men (and women) who are barbecuing up a storm at QVM. You’ll find crocodile, emu and few other Aussie favourites, all cooked and seasoned to perfection. Keep an eye out for them, all in full outback kit.
Sassy Street Artists
The acts change weekly, but the standard does not. As well as a main stage with live performances, there’s also plenty of roaming performers—think angels on stilts, mythical and magical costumes, and hoola-hoop extraordinaires. Best selfie wins.
We don’t know about you, but winter has hit us in the face. One moment it was the never-ending summer, and then... surprise, frost! The market has a fantastic selection of one-of-a-kind cosy must-haves. All made locally, you’re guaranteed to find something that will last an age and kick Melbourne winter’s butt.
