The 5:2 diet has been in the headlines a lot lately—it’s the ‘diet du jour’, the detox that’s everyone’s talking about, the ‘OMG can you believe such-and-such is trying that?’ sensation.

One thing’s for sure; whether you’re a fan of the clean living lifestyle or not, there’s A LOT of misinformation out there! And since there’s no escaping the 5:2 Diet, why not chat to an expert to find out more?

We sat down with Joel Berlin, co-owner of Karmic Cold Pressed Juice, for a 1:1 about the 5:2 diet. Passionate about health, fitness and clean living, Joel has made it his mission to get to the bottom of what the 5:2 Diet is all about, uncovering a myriad of benefits along the way. Turns out, adopting the 5:2 Diet is a lot easier than you think and the benefits are many!

Here’s what Joel from Karmic Cold Pressed Juice had to say about the 5:2 Diet…

Okay, So What Exactly is the 5:2 Diet Again?

‘Also known as the intermittent fasting, the 5:2 Diet follows the premise that we are designed as humans to experience periods of fasting and periods of feasting—this is what essentially allows us to maintain a healthy and stable weight. By intermittently cutting our calorie intake, rather than all at once, our body is able to repair itself and restore damaged cells, whilst using energy to burn fat.’ Simples.

5:2 is NOT a Celebrity Diet

‘Sure, there may have been some celebs reported to be on the 5:2 Diet lately, but it’s not a celebrity endorsed diet. This concept has been around for a while, with studies held to prove the diet’s effectiveness and benefits. 5:2 is more about consistency and clean living—a far gentler way to detox and rejuvenate the body.’ And let’s face it, most celeb diets are whack…

The Benefits Are Many

When it comes to the benefits of the 5:2 Diet, a lot of people mention weight loss. Sure, intermittent fasting helps in that domain, however Joel says there are other benefits too.

‘The 5:2 Diet helps to reduce the amount of insulin-like hormones your body produces, which in turns reduces your risk of age-related diseases such as Alzheimer’s, along with reducing cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Intermittent fasting also helps to boost your cognitive skills (surprise, surprise—when you eat less crap, your brain doesn’t feel so fuzzy!) and gives your mind and body the chance to stop, reassess and rejuvenate. The result? You’ll see an improvement in anxiety levels, clarity and moods.’ So long, resting bitch face.

So, What Should You Eat On the ‘2’ Days?

A Karmic Cold Pressed Juice cleanse provides the perfect package of low calorie, low fructose (less than 5% per cleanse, in fact!) but mineral dense nutrition for your '2' days. According to Joel, ‘The three cleanse levels have all been designed to give you the vitamins and nutrients your body needs on the fast days, with the inclusion of leafy green, red veggie, and nut milk based blends. It’s all about smart fasting!’ And let’s face it, when you’re fasting, you don’t want to have to think about where your next meal’s coming from.

And Yes, You’ll Still Get All Your Nutrients

‘A Karmic cleanse contains the raw, living nutrients from over 8kg of fresh vegetables so you’re guaranteed to be feeding your body the best stuff on your fast days. Unless you’re eating more than 8kg of vegetables over any other 2 day period—if so, I’d like to see that!—your body has everything to gain from a cleanse and nothing to lose!’ Winning!

How About the ‘5’ Days?

On the '5' days, Karmic recommend you follow a largely whole foods diet where possible. The key? Limit your intake of processed foods! This means plenty of fresh vegetables, nuts, fruit, good oils, eggs, and grass-fed meats, along with dairy and legumes in small amounts. Refined sugars, processed oils and what you would broadly call 'junk food' have no place in any healthy lifestyle outside of the very occasional treat. (Sorry to rain on your potato chips parade).

But I Can’t Live Without My Coffee! (And errr, alcohol…)

Ahhh, coffee and the occasional tipple—our vices (well, two of them)! According to Joel, Karmic often receive questions around alcohol and caffeine. ‘Ultimately, these substances are changing the chemical composition of the body and therefore can inhibit—at least temporarily—the body's ability to function at an optimal level. That said, part of every healthy lifestyle is the ability to occasionally indulge yet appropriately limit one’s intake. In short, you can still have fun during the 5:2 Diet; it's just important to be mindful of how much you’re consuming.’ We love you, Joel. We really, really love you.

Don’t Worry About Over-Eating Afterwards

What we love about a Karmic Cold Pressed Juice cleanse is that the blends are not just full of good-for-you vitamins and minerals, they also help to balance the body’s natural metabolism and they contain less than 5% fructose per cleanse—try finding that anywhere else!

These two factors help the body to better regulate blood glucose and reduce those sugar cravings, so your body naturally doesn’t feel the need to gorge on indulgent treats afterwards. ‘Our clients report that their appetite for high-energy foods decreases dramatically after a Karmic cleanse, so if you’re worried about over-eating post 5:2, don’t be! A cleanse is actually just what you need to help you beat the cravings.’
