Where to Shop Paleo in Melbourne

By Clare Acheson

While there’s a tonne of great Paleo cafes in Melbourne (the best of which can be found on this handy hit-list), any Paleotarian worth their weight in lean meats knows you’ve got to shop well to eat well 24/7. To help keep your diet lean and clean, we’ve rounded up the best Paleo shops in Melbourne, including butchers, cooking workshops and health food stores that are either based in or deliver to our glorious city. Delish!

Best for Meat

The Meat Society, online with home delivery

The Meat Society is our new Melbourne meat delivery saviour! If you’re a Melbourne Paleo fan who loves cooking from scratch but hates dragging bags of groceries back from the butcher, this is the best online butcher delivery service you’ll discover this year. The online meat delivery service tracks down top quality meat from Melbourne’s best producers and delivers it to your doorstep for free using a refrigerated courier and recyclable insulated boxes.

What’s better yet is that you don’t pay top-end prices—we’re talking supermarket dollars for restaurant grade meat, people—and your meat delivery order can be customised depending on what you want to eat that week. Everything is lean, sustainable, grass-fed and cruelty-free too, meaning you can keep up your routine while supporting the good guys. A Paleo-friendly meat delivery service we're nuts about.

Best for Fruit, Veggies, Nuts & Seeds

Street Organics, Malvern

Organic cafe and grocery store, Street Organics, is another one of our top Paleo shops in Melbourne—the selection here is huge! From the freshest fruit and veggies from local Victorian producers, to nuts, seeds, grains and more, Street Organics has it all. The best part? Items are bought in bulk in order to keep costs down, plus Street Organics home deliver—perfect if you're a time poor Paleo fiend!

Aunt Maggie's, various locations

Championing organic food in Melbourne, Aunt Maggie's five stores (Balaclava, Fitzroy, Malvern, Brunswick and Hampton) keep a stellar range of organic fruit, vegetables, nuts, snacks and other clean living goods, perfect for the Melbourne Paleo crowd. Several of the premises have nutritionists and naturopaths on site—great for you Listers who are still getting to grips with your Paleo diet—as well as stocking organic cosmetics, beers and wines. A must-visit if you need to do a major Paleo shop.

Terra Madre, Northcote

The Terra Madre health food store in Northcote is our top Melbourne Paleo shop on the city’s northside. Literally translated as ‘earth mother’, the store’s interior is packed chock-full of fresh goods, bulk essentials, gluten-free and dairy-free alternatives, and supplements. Again, naturopaths are on hand for all your Paleo needs.

The Common Good, Hawthorn

Hawthorn health food store, The Common Good, specialises in gourmet delights that do you good. As well as having an extensive range of organic Paleo foods, they also stock some great dairy-free, gluten-free and ancient grain based products for you part-time Melbourne Paleos.

The Village Store, Yarraville

The Village Store in Yarraville adopts the motto ‘we love food,’ which is coincidental, hey? Because at The Urban List, we love food too! Open seven days a week, its huge range includes everything from nut butters to Paleo cold cuts. This Paleo shop in Melbourne is an utter winner.

Best for Muesli, Snacks & Desserts

Paleo Pure, online with home delivery

Almonds, Brazil nuts, coconut, sunflower seeds…Paleo Pure’s oven baked, grain-free muesli is so delicious that we could snack on it all day. While they make a variety of flavours, it’s their 100% Paleo fruit-free muesli that we’d recommend—a Paleo breakfast must-try. You can order it online or visit their website to find a stockist.

Loving Earth, online with home delivery

It’s fair to say that we love everything about Loving Earth—their raw chocolate, their kale chips, even their sustainable packaging! Again, you’ll find their products in the best paleo shops in Melbourne, and also online.

Best for Books, Cooking Schools & Workshops

Books for Cooks

Books for Cooks (hint: the title says it all) is a Fitzroy institution. They sell a fabulous collection of Paleo cookbooks and often host signings in-store—perfect for picking up a gift for a Paleo friend!

The Source Bulk Foods, Prahran

While The Source Bulk Foods is one of our favourite Paleo shops in Melbourne for raw ingredients, it also runs awesome cooking classes and Paleo workshops where you can pick up handy recipes and tips. Too easy!

Paleo Den, Prahran

Paleo Den is a Paleo cafe in Prahran and a hot-spot for learning how to cook Paleo in Melbourne. With simple to follow recipes, it’s a great place to network with other clean eating folk. You can find out more about their up-coming classes via their Facebook page.
