It was only a matter of time, right? Sydney’s cult Nutella dessert bar, Tella Balls, has been eyeing off Melbourne for a while, and they’ve finally found a spot they like: downstairs at the Melbourne Central food court. It’s not the most glamorous Melbourne location, but you can’t beat that kind of foot traffic.
“So many Melbournians have been reaching out on social media begging us to bring our concept to them. They spoke and we listened!” says co-owner Simon Kappatos.
Tella Balls has become a sleeper hit in NSW and QLD over the last couple of years. They started with the classic Tella Ball doughnut—a fluffy, bombolini-style dough ball, rolled in cinnamon sugar and piped with hot Nutella. No surprise, they’re still Tella’s big ticket item. People come from miles to try these things.
It wasn’t long though till the dessert bar expanded into Nutella sliders, doughnut fries, doughnut ice-cream cones (!!), dessert kebabs and housemade pancakes. Melbourne will be getting the same menu as the Sydney dessert bar, which includes the famous Dessert Lasagne—choc mousse and whipped cream layered one on the other, with a chocolate biscuit base and lashing of Nutella, topped with a scoop of vanilla bean gelato. Somewhere a personal trainer is crying...
Make sure you also check out the Pastatella (ie. dessert pasta). Housemade crepes, cut into fettucini-like strips, tossed in Belgian milk and white chocolate, then covered in gelato and shaved chocolate. Out of control.
It was one thing running the KFC and Maccas gauntlet after work, but good luck getting past this place...
