Sure, we know Auckland is beginning to feel the chills, but that’s no excuse for hibernation. Get excited, because this weekend an epic wine festival hits the City of Sails. But that’s not all, folks. There’s also markets, a party, shows and movies to fill your weekend diaries to the brim. Here are our picks of the top things to do in Auckland this weekend.

Air New Zealand 75 Years | Auckland Museum

If you haven’t been yet, make your way to the Auckland Museum for a special journey of the history of New Zealand’s fave airline. This interactive and fun exhibition, features the tales and glamour of flying. A true success story, almost everyone has some sort of memory of Air New Zealand. This is your final chance to create your own digital airline (they send you PDF to print and make it), have a virtual reality inflight experience and see how the uniform has changed over the decades. Closing this Sunday, it’s a great activity to do in Auckland this weekend. 

The Idea Collective |MOTAT

Showcasing innovation, The Idea Collective is a cluster of events hosted by international and local keynote speakers. Techweek AKL 2016 is a new event to add to your calendar and focuses on reshaping the world through design, innovation and technology. There will be plenty to do with courses such as an introduction to robotics, game making and 3D printing. 

The Documentary Edge Festival | Q Theatre

Showcasing the very best in documentary film from New Zealand and around the world, the Documentary Edge Festival is now in its eleventh year. Carefully curated films will take you on a journey of hope and despair, opening your eyes to the diversity of the world. Here are our top documentary picks you don’t want to miss. 

The Graduate | The Stables Theatre

The Graduate brings to the stage the sixties movie that tells the story of Benjamin Braddock who has recently graduated from college. Returning home, he is seduced by the wife of his father’s business partner, Mrs Robinson (of Simon and Garfunkel fame) but soon finds himself falling in love with her daughter instead. On stage at the Stables Theatre in Ellerslie, get your tickets here

Everest Untold | Herald Theatre

Live on stage from Friday through until June 6th, Everest Untold reveals the untold story of the two men who made the historic climb of Mt Everest with Sir Edmond Hillary. The stories of team leader, Sir John Hunt and fellow Kiwi George Lowe, will change your understanding of this momentous achievement. Written by local Gareth Davies, it stars Stephan Lovatt (Angels in America and The Book of Everything) alongside Edwin Wright (Manifesto 2083 and Slow West) and is one performance not to be missed this May. To Kill A Mockingbird | The Civic

Head along to The Civic this weekend for the final performances of To Kill A Mockingbird. Presented by The Auckland Theatre Company, it brings to life the classic novel by Harper Lee in a stellar performance that you don’t want to miss.

Winetopia | Shed 10

If you’re all about great wine and great food, then head along to Shed 10 this Friday or Saturday for a three-hour session of just that. Be escorted through the world of red, whites and everything in between by top experts. Share a glass with celebs and tempt your palate with dishes from O’Connell St Bistros’ Mark Southon and many more. Click here for all the deets.

The Block Party | ASB Showgrounds 

Celebrate urban music in this multi-stage event this Friday night. Strictly R18, The Block Party features artists such as Tomorrow People, Che Fu & The Krates, PNC and Times X Two. More deets here

General Collective Autumn Markets | Ellerslie

This Saturday sees the return of the General Collective Markets. With more than 130 stalls, it showcases handpicked, high quality nice things. With plenty of street food vendors, door prizes, face painting for the kids and massages for the adults, it’s a family-friendly event where you’re sure to find something special.

Auckland Indie Markets | ASB Showgrounds

Head along to the ASB Showgrounds this Sunday for a day of ethical trade. With some of New Zealand’s finest artists, crafters and creators sharing their wares, there will be food trucks on hand to fill the belly while you shop.
