Awesome Things To Do In Auckland This Weekend, Things to do in Auckland

Auckland is serving up some fantastic events this weekend—the much-anticipated Writers Festival is in full swing, while this is your last chance for a laugh at the 2016 International Comedy Festival, which comes to a close on Sunday. There are also markets, a boat show, and, if you’re feeling like giving back, then there’s a challenge and a chance to #scoopitup.

Get planning!

All Weekend

To Kill A Mockingbird | The Civic

Telling the story of lawyer Atticus Finch’s struggle for justice when a black man is falsely accused of raping a white woman, this much-loved book hits The Civic. Presented by The Auckland Theatre Company, it is well worth going to. Read our full review here.

Fair Trade Challenge | Everywhere

Love your coffee and want to do some good this weekend? Join the World Fairtrade Challenge, which encourages you to raise your cup in support of small-scale coffee farmers who are facing the effects of climate change.  Buy your fairtrade coffee and see if New Zealand can take out the ‘most cups drunk per capita’. Sign up at the World Fairtrade Challenge website and #fairtradechallenge your weekend.

Boat Show | ASB Showgrounds

Us Kiwis just love the water, and this weekend you can head to the ASB Showgrounds to learn about all things boats, engines, electronics, fishing and dive gear.  You’ll meet Kiwi ‘Shark Man’, Riley Elliot who is sharing his close encounters with sharks and The Boating Guy will be there to offer advice about anything to do with boating and fishing. If you prefer to be up high, there will be a special Heletranz heliport to take you on a scenic flight around Auckland. The Taniwha II, a racing submarine, will also make an appearance.

Ice Age Live! A Mammoth Show On Ice | Vector Arena

Head along to Vector Arena this weekend for a spectacular ice skating show with the beloved characters from the three blockbuster Ice Age movies.  Manny, Sid and Diego set out on an adventure in order to rescue young mammoth, Peaches, when she is kidnapped by an evil bird. Colourful and enchanting, this is a great show for all the family. Get your tickets here.

Health Franklin’s Chopper Live From Anzakistan | SKYCITY Theatre

Chopper is back and ready to lay down the law.  After taking the former countries of New Zealand and Australia and throwing out the shit bits, he’s created a new superpower, Anzakistan. Expect comedy gold as Chopper asks you to join the revolution, harden up and hear from your glorious leader.

Jeremy Elwood—Three Night Stand | Q Theatre

Graduation Gala Concerto Competition | Auckland Town Hall

Start your weekend off with a bit of culture as School of Music soloists and the University of Auckland Symphony Orchestra battle it out for a total prize pool of $15,000 to go towards future endeavours and professional growth.

Sounds of Greece | Nicolino Restaurant

Take a journey through the various music styles of Greece at Devonport’s Nicolino restaurant this Thursday. The music and dance show is now in its sixth year, and there will be Greek and Mediterranean dishes available, just like a traditional Greek tavern.

POP Skip Jump | Corner Fort Street and Fort Lane

Head along to Fort St for some serious jumping. The Auckland Skipping Club will be there with 9 metre ropes where you can show off your skills—double Dutch it if you’ve got really fancy feet. There will be sweet sounds to get your bounce on.

Friday 13th May

Green Bay Street Food Winter | Green Bay

It’s goodbye to summer and hello to winter this Friday night at Barron Drive in Green Bay.  This street food market is launching into the winter months with an 80s theme, so get out those big shoulder pads, boof that hair with spray, put on your fingerless gloves and head along for their Eats & Beats. Because it's getting cooler, you can head inside to the Green Bay Community house, while the vendors will continue to cook outside. For those who choose to sit inside, there will even be a waiter service thanks to volunteers from the local high school.

The Girl On The Train: Paula Hawkins | ASB Theatre

Join New Zealand novelist Nicky Pellegrino as she chats to the author of the best-selling (and chilling) novel, The Girl on the Train, Paula Hawkins.  The psychological thriller has sold in 44 territories and been made into a film, being released later this year. This is your chance to hear from the woman who changed the way we view commuters. Click here for more great things to see at this year’s Writers Festival.

LIBATION | Deep Creek Brewing Co

Always wondered what it was like in a brewery? This weekend, Deep Creek throws open its doors and allows you to do just that. There will be fantastic food from Coast, Maidstone Burgers, Project Paco, Dixie BBQ and live music performances from Phil Madsen, Eddie Gaiger as well as DJs Rusty and DeeWhy. If you really love it, you can purchase a bottle, can or flagon to take home and enjoy.

Children under the age of 12 get in free.

Auckland Writers Festival Family Day | Herald Theatre
