25 Totally Awesome Free Things To Do In Auckland This Summer


You spent way too much of your hard-earned mullah on Christmas presents and booze… didn’t ya?! Yeah, join the club. Never fear, your summer holz can still be a blast. And, luckily for you, here at The Urban List, we’ve got the inside scoop of all the awesome, free things you can do around Auckland. In fact, we know of 25 things that’ll be sure to keep you busy and very entertained. 

So, give your bank account a break and check out this list of free summer activities in Auckland that’ll make the warmer months worthy of remembering. Hey, what’s the harm after all?! They’re f r e e.

  1. What’s summer without dining cross-legged on the grass, admiring a New Zealand sunset? Raid your pantry, round up the squad and/or bae and check out one of these adorable picnic spots.
  2. Nab yourself a spot at Silo Park’s outdoor cinema and enjoy their Friday night movie screenings. Running from December through till March, Silo Park brings the goods—be sure to check out the line-up!
  3. Alternatively, your local park will likely be hosting the much-loved Movies In Parks this summer. Stay tuned for what’s bound to be another awesome line-up!  
  4. Yay! Music In Parks is also back this summer—sit back, enjoy the tunes and feel the stress of 2017 melt away.
  5. Feelin’ sophisticated? Check out the Auckland Art Gallery and marvel at all the incredible pieces of art. Bonus points for the air-conditioning—bliss!
  6. If you’re an Aucklander who hasn’t had time to check it out yet, head to the Auckland War Memorial Museum. It’s a fascinating spot!
  7. The Auckland Domain is pretty, well, pretty. Don’t be shy to explore—the Domain includes the picturesque Wintergarden. The floral and fauna here is dee-lightful!
  8. Speaking of nature, the Auckland Botanic Gardens are visited by hundreds of thousands of people each year, and for good reason! Pay a visit to the gardens and enjoy the serene surroundings and unique landscape. 
  9. From here you can wander through Totara Park where you’ll find a swimming pool, mountain bike tracks and barbecues. Sounds like a Kiwi summer!
  10. Auckland Live’s Summer in the Square will be cranking until 24 February. Aotea Square will be bustling with ALL the entertainment, activities and events.
  11. Guys, there’s a thing called reading. And it’s actually pretty cool. Read to your heart’s content at one of the city’s many libraries.
  12. Or, opt for the outdoors, take your book (BYO snacks) and read away the afternoon. Hey, it’s the holidays, you don’t gotta be nowhere!
  13. Embrace your inner Little Mermaid and snorkel your way around Auckland. We’ve rounded up the best spots here.
  14. Perhaps you prefer to be on top of the water? Opt to surfpaddle board or kayak instead. We know the best places to do them all!
  15. You don’t need to own a barbecue to get a taste of flame-grilled deliciousness. There are plenty of parks and beaches across Auckland with free-to-use barbecue facilities.
  16. You know what’s also free (and awesome)? Walking! Walk your way through these stunning weekend walks and hikes.
  17. But the walking doesn’t stop there—no siree! You can then tackle Auckland’s prettiest walks as well as walks you didn’t know existed in and around Auckland.
  18. Alternatively, ask Mum for some petrol money and embark on these five mountainous adventures. Raglan’s Mt Karioi is particularly awesome and totally worth your efforts.
  19. Otherwise, make use of that petrol money and take yourself to one of Auckland’s best beach day trips. Added bonus: making the most of what NZ has to offer?!
