5 Cafes and Restaurants To Visit This Weekend

The weekend and food are—hands down—our two favourite things. From Friday night til the last sweet hours of Sunday eve, you’ll find us munching on everything in sight. To ensure your foodie adventure is as good as it can be this weekend, we’ve rounded up five of our fave cafes and restaurants. From morning cocktails to an awesome food truck line-up, we’ve got you covered.

Auckland City

If there’s one thing you gotta drink before you die (or at least before Monday morning), it’s Oaken’s pineapple lassi. It doesn’t sound life-changing, we know, but let us assure you it absolutely is. We guarantee you’ll thank us for the recommendation when you get your mitts on this yoghurt drink made with roast pineapple, burnt butter and mint. It’s like they’ve put three of the world’s best ingredients and popped in a blender—cause smoothie-fying stuff is always a good idea. Lassi aside, Oaken is a gorgeous inner-city space serving up delish eats. Highlights include their six (6!) egg brekkie dishes, their sticky pork belly salad and a divine chocolate and coffee baklava dessert.

The newly opened outdoor biergarten at Hallertau has been long-anticipated but it’s finally here. With a massive covered-seating area and amazing gastropub-esque fare, Aucklanders have embraced the experience whole-heartedly—so much so that you should really making a booking for this one. The food alone is a good enough reason to make the visit, but let’s be honest we’re all here for the frothy stuff—grab a tasting paddle to find your fave.

Bird on a Wire

Up your brunch game with a friendly pre-midday tipple to celebrate those two sweet days of freedom. There aren’t enough cafes serving breakfast cocktails, but luckily our mates at Bird on a Wire have come to the party with their new brekkie menu. Grab a fellow lady/man of leisure and indulge in a breakfast plate for two. This spread comes heaving with breakfast goodies including their stellar truffled tatties. The best part? It comes paired with your choice of a bloody Mary, mimosa, Aperol spritz or glass of Prosecco.

Auckland City

There’s a reason Cassia has been granted the accolades it has: the food is insane. Seriously, one bite of that pani puri and you’ll be transported to heaven. This is Indian food at its finest and you’ll be pleased to know there’s no butter chicken in sight. The wine list is superb and it’d be rude not to indulge in a glass (or two) in this cavernous dining room. The room itself is a marvel—striking the perfect balance between the drama and privacy with a humming open kitchen complementing dim lighting and intimate seating.

The Street Food Collective

Auckland loves its street food—and so do we! At Ponsonby’s Street Food Collective, some of the city’s best street food vendors come together to dish up their delicious eats in the shared space. There will be an awesome line-up here this Saturday with The Bearded Clam, Project Paco, Coreano and Fired Pizza Company all making guest appearances. Wash your meal down with a cocktail from the on-site campervan bar and you’ll be away laughing.
