No weekend would be complete without the consumption of copious amounts of food, right? This weekend should be no different! To give you some inspo, we’ve rounded up five top-notch cafes and restaurants to visit this weekend. From burgers with a cult following, to a spot perfect for a Mother’s Day brunch, there’s something for every palate and every occasion. Get feasting, folks!

Big J’s

Mt Wellington

Oh how we love this Mt Wellington gem. If you’re yet to visit Big J’s, it’s about time you saw what the hype is about. There’s nothing fancy about this takeaway joint—expect to walk through a plastic door curtain on arrival. A meal here is easy on the wallet, serving up hearty burgers, toasted sammies, hot dogs, fresh fish and all the usual takeaway suspects—battered sausages included. Big J’s has weekly specials with this week’s burger starring garlic and herb marinated steak, grilled bacon, sautéed onions, camembert, creamy wild mushrooms and a sage and tarragon mayo. That’s dinner sorted then.

Located in the stunning Wallace Arts Centre is Homestead. The beautifully refurbished heritage home boosts views of the sweeping lawn and neighbouring Monte Cecilia Park. The café is the perfect spot to visit for a weekend brunch with a menu boosting crumpets (yes, plural—there are three on offer), bruschetta and a very delicious spiced date, lemon and almond granola served with seasonal fruit and yoghurt. Visit with your mama this weekend for a Mother’s Day to remember—she’ll love ya for it! Alternatively, take Mum along to one of these spots.

We all know Revelry as a place to shake your tail feather come Saturday night, but did you know it also has delicious food menu? Graze on jalapenos stuffed with goat’s cheese, crispy chicken thighs (our personal fave) and brie arancini balls with shiitake mushrooms and walnut. For your main, choose between the likes of lamp rump, a cola-braised pork burger or their pie of the day. Day or night, the Ponsonby hot spot’s extensive drinks menu is on offer with their cocktails tasting delicious at all hours.

Miss Clawdy

North Wharf

You haven’t visited Miss Clawdy?! Oh lawdy, you’re missing out! The North Wharf eatery serves finger-lickin’ Southern American food in exceptional style. Here you’ll find ceviche, fried chicken (duh), po boys and a uber comforting jambalaya served with prawns, chicken, sausages and mixed veges. No meal here is complete without dessert and Miss Clawdy’s key lime pie with perfectly torched meringue is not to be missed. You can thank us later. Wash down with a cocktail or two—it is the weekend after all.

Non Solo Pizza

Non Solo Pizza (or NSP to the locals) is your one-stop shop for—you guessed it—pizza! At this Parnell restaurant they have Italian cuisine down-pat. Think freshly baked focaccia, gnocchi, risotto and lasagne followed by a serve of tiramisu and/or gelati. We can’t go past their margherita prosciutto cotto e funghi. For those of us who can’t speak Italian, it’s a pizza topped with tomato, ham, mushroom, basil and a whole lot of mozzarella. Warning: their pizzas are huuuge so you might wanna go halvesies or opt for doggy bag.
