Athleisure: It’s A Thing (And We Love It)

Athleisure;  it’s fashion’s latest buzzword and it goes hand in hand with the fact that active-wear is the new black. Yep, it’s true—leggings are now widely accepted as pants and it’s rather standard to meet your best pals for brunch on a Saturday morning in head-to-toe Lululemon; the fact that you may have not even set foot in a gym since last year is completely irrelevant.

If you thought the whole sports-luxe movement was a passing trend, best you invest in a little designer spandex—because, you my friend are sorely mistaken. From Karl Lagerfeld sending tweed sneakers down the runway to Mary Katrantzou lending her iconic prints to now two collections for Adidas Originals to Tom Ford’s sequinned football jerseys to the unofficial uniform of every it-girl; there is no denying that fashion has become synonymous with fitness. It’s a cultural phenom, and chances are, if you are yet to embrace the trend; your workout wardrobe simply isn’t cutting it. Let’s be honest, any garment that can be worn to spin class and then out to coffee is well and truly worth the investment, don’t you think? I mean, who doesn’t want to want to be ridiculously comfortable while oozing cool. And that’s exactly what the athleisure trend is at the moment; cool. It’s a trend with a cult-like following of those who work out in (serious) style and love a pressed green juice. A bit wanky? Totally. Are we on board? You bet.

Whether you’ve been on the bandwagon for years, or simply need to update that workout-wardrobe as you begin for quest for the perfect summer body (winter is almost over, friends!), we’re breaking down the ultimate wardrobe must-haves to ensure you sweat in style and your active-wear attire is anything but run of the (tread) mill…

Luxe leggings

Ah, the ultimate staple, the luxe legging. For boys and gals; the latest in legwear in the sporting (and err… non-sporting) arena fuses functionality and fashion. From revolutionary tech-fabrics that aid in post-workout recovery, to unique materials that suck you in to the trendiest of digital prints; luxe leggings are an absolute essential and are well worth the investment. But be warned, if you have to question if you can ‘wear these leggings as pants’—chances are you definitely can’t. And if you’re wondering if you can still wear your baggy-sweats from high school to pound the pavement; there answer is; no, you can’t.

Statement sneakers

Sneakers aren’t just reserved for hitting the treadmill anymore; you can pair them with almost anything. Hang up your heels and opt for a pair of statement sneakers that’ll ensure you look the part through even the most gruelling workouts—as well as keeping you (and your feet) comfy round the clock, whether your running errands or heading out to lunch.

If you’re a slave to all-black attire or bright colours and statement prints make you feel uneasy, sneakers are the perfect way to “express yourself”. Try a blindingly bright neon hue or a pair in a OTT-print; if you’re a real athleisure devotee; invest in a pair of sneakers from one of your favourite designers, think Valentino or Chanel.

The ultimate ‘post-workout’ pullover

Whether it’s to actually wear post-workout or to keep you warm in the wind-chill during early morning breakfast dates (don’t, worry, we won’t tell if you skipped Pilates) a sports-luxe jacket or pullover is a must. Opt for fabrics like tech-fleece or neoprene; worth the extra cashola—they’ll last the distance and look far more luxe.

A puffer vest

I was late to embrace the puffer-vest, I was convinced it was reserved for serious hikers or Dads that wore Birkenstocks (before they were cool). But, the puffer-vest is definitely ‘a thing’; donned by everyone from Olivia Palermo to Jess Biel. Layer it over your pullover or jacket while it’s still freezing pre-sunrise and keep it handy as the mercury rises come spring to throw over your tank or sports-bra for post-workout smoothies.

Mirrored shades

Nothing completes an après-gym outfit like a pair of statement mirrored sunglasses; they’re also the perfect table accessory for when you Instagram your post-workout brunch (yeah, we’re onto you…)

Printed or brightly hued tanks and tees

Even if you’re a guy who wears only shades of navy or a girl who’s wardrobe is 99% black; have a bit of fun with your workout wardrobe, because if you can’t have a bit of fun while you work out; when on earth can you?! Opt for a colour you’d never normally wear or an eye-catching print, it’ll make getting dressed for your workout of choice that much more exciting… Just remember if you’re making a statement on top; its business on the bottom; pair with an understated pair of luxe black leggings or shorts.

In case you can’t decide between pastel, neon or animal print for your Sunday yoga-sesh; now you can have them all.
Surely we aren’t the only ones with a marble obsession.

An apres-gym carry all

Keep the Fitness First back pack in the car; stand out from the crowd and get yourself a statement gym bag or carry-all to wear with pride and to tote all your post-workout essentials.

Only time will tell if this newfound social acceptance of wearing leggings to lunch, brunch and everything in between will stick around… But for now, embrace comfort and enjoy the fact that you don’t have to wear pants with a fly or a shirt with buttons to do up. With spring just around the corner, you don’t need a workout buddy to get you motivated to start working on that summer bod’, all you need is a new workout wardrobe, because, who doesn’t want to sweat in Stella McCartney?!
