Permission to cry—Authorized. The iconic Rainbow's End Pirate Ship is closing down. We repeat, the one ride you were able to go on from the youngest of ages is officially swinging its last swing!
We know, those childhood memories are soaring back to you in one big soppy mess. This was the ride for every kid born and raised in Auckland. Remember when your family would be whizzing around on the go-kart track next door but you were too short to drive? This is where The Pirate Ship had your back, always. And, after 34 years of swinging, our loyal friend is about to roar it’s very last “Argggh Me Hearties” before it gets ripped down. #SaveThePiratesShip.
There may be a silver lining hidden under all this nostalgia though. The reason The Pirate Ship is retiring is so it can pave the way for a new development at the park. We’re thinking this has gotta be the most epic ride yet—Disney World standards surely. What else could justify knocking down our beloved ship?
For those who are thinking they’ve gotta get in for one last pirate fix, you’re not too late. The Pirate Ship is swinging right up until Saturday 19th August, where it’ll have a much deserved farewell. Prizes will be given out for the best dressed pirates and there will even be a photographer on site for a cute photo op of you and your pirate beau.
We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but this just had to be told. We think it’s time to grab ourselves a large candy floss, some hot chips and spend the day with our ol’ mate The Pirate Ship before he’s gone—Foreveeeeer.
