M&M’s, a large popcorn and one of those double-choc ice creams with the nuts too? It’s no wonder we love a treat night at the movies—especially when it’s a fabulous flick on the screen. Well we’ve got great news! It seems August is officially the month for relaxation and indulgence as there is an overwhelming amount of movies about to drop in the theatre. From your typical rom-com to the classic action-thriller, this list includes something for everyone. There may even be one or two that are worth spending that extra mulah on… Goldclass and champagne anyone?
The Big Sick
This is a movie that perfectly combines comedy, tragedy and romance into the portrayal of a Pakistani man’s relationship with an American student (cliché at it’s finest but totally adorable). Kumail is a comic who meets Emily at one of his stand-up shows—he’s also an Uber driver which they find out after she phones a ride after their one night stand and his phone buzzes away—awwwkward! As their relationship blossoms he realises that his traditional Muslim parents will never agree to such a romance. We won’t give away too much, but when Emily ends up in a coma in hospital, Kumail finds himself more invested than he imagined. This is definitely a film that deserves a trip to Gold Class accompanied with a vino, dinner and a comfy seat.
Atomic Blonde
If you haven’t yet heard of Atomic Blonde, it’s safe to assume you’ve been living with SpongeBob under a pineapple. This is ultra-babe Charlize Theron’s time to kickass—literally. She’s equal parts spycraft, sensuality and savagery as she plays Agent Lorraine Broughton who is sent to Berlin on a deadly mission. We love seeing female protagonists dominate and it’s no surprise that Charlize makes us proud to be a woman in 2017! An action movie at its best, this one is deserving of the big screen for sure.
American Made
Drugs, the CIA and the ‘80s. American Made is quite possibly the best combination of a sure-fire blockbuster success. Throw in Tom Cruise? How could we resist this action packed film? Cruise plays Barry Steal, a pilot who lands work for the CIA as a drug runner, but as the film goes on, the heat turns up. The operation shines light on the Medellin cartel as well as almost bringing down the Reagan White House. Think perfectly groomed suits partaking in the most lethal fighting scenes. We have to admit; it’s no surprise Cruise was cast in this one.
47 Meters Down
If you loved The Shallows, then you are going to absolutely obsess over 47 Meters Down. Starring Mandy Moore and Claire Holt as two young sisters (Kate and Lisa), who travel to Mexico for a girls’ vacay. Expecting good times and a little adventure, they end up on a cage dive in shark-infested waters. This is the film that brings your deepest swimming fears to life as the cage breaks away from the boat and sends the girls stranded on the ocean’s floor with a very limited supply of oxygen. Our hairs are standing on end already! This is a film for adrenaline junkies and thrill-seekers.
Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets
Cara Delevingne is back on the big screen alongside Dane DeHaan in this sci-fi film. The pair are sent to investigate a ‘galactic empire’ where they’re met with alternative species who threaten their universe. As expected, time travelling is incorporated, as is just about every other profound mythical idea you could think of. But, to put it simply, the two have to race against time to save the world they live in. Eeeeek. (Hero or not Cara, we still love you).
Logan Lucky
This may quite possibly be the action film of the year! With a cast that will make you lose your shit, Logan Lucky stars Channing Tatum, Seth MacFarlane, Katie Holmes and, of course, Daniel Craig. The plot goes a little like this: A badass family from the hills of West Virginia team up with a few Redneck Robbers to undergo an epic heist to steal $14 million from the Motor Speedway. As every action movie goes, things don’t quite go to plan. Car chases take place, fights break out and well, boys will be boys. What’s more, six NASCAR drivers make cameo appearances in the film. It’s safe to say the car chases are going to be a little more than your regular Queen St drag race.
The Trip To Spain
They've eaten their way through Northern England and Italy and now they’re about to embark on yet another deliciously deadpan culinary road trip. Steve Coogan and Roby Brydon are back and this time they’re en route to Spain to sample the best of the country’s gastronomic offerings. They’re ridiculously hilarious in their banter and a pleasure to watch. Us foodies are pretty excited for this one. You’ll see plates of paella gracing your screen alongside their renowned celebrity impressions, the finest beverages and views to match. The Trip To Spain is the light-hearted film your Sunday self has been calling for.
