Confession time: I’ve never actually been into an Al’s Deli. They deliver. And I’m a sloth at the best of times. But for those of you who actually like to put pants on and leave the house, you’ll be happy to know, following the success of their inaugural diner uptown and their second outpost in bustling O’Connell Street, Al’s Deli has branched out to open their third restaurant in the vibrant suburb of Kingsland.
The narrow dining room is dotted with leaners, leather bar stools and banquette seating. Colourful neon signs give a pop of colour to the rich wood interior. But enough about furniture… Because, food.
And the food, as I’m hoping most of you will know, is glorious at this Montreal-inspired joint. Firstly, their handmade bagels are certainly something to write home about. And while their NYC bagel-counterparts are more commonly known around these ways, a classic Canadian creation reigns supreme thanks to their dense and chewy texture, and these ones house a tasty plethora of combinations from smoked brisket to the classic BLT.
If burgers are your kryptonite, then Al has you covered. They’re unashamedly on the large side and you’ll certainly need to loosen your belt mid-way through. All beef burgers are 100% angus, but there’s also chicken and vege options, if you’re that way inclined. If you’re wanting to embark on an all-out Canadian creation, the Poutine Burger is right up your alley—Angus beef topped with crunchy potato fries, cheese curd and gravy. Or try the Holy Tabarnak—two 150g angus patties, hickory sauce, cheese, bacon and onion rings. And make sure you order plenty of sides and a milkshake to wash it all down. Bonus: if you have an annoying friend who doesn’t eat gluten or is trying to lose weight, they have burger salad bowls, too.
And last but not least… Doughnuts. Al’s doughnuts aren’t like the rest of them. The light sugar coated dough is topped with dense icing in a myriad of flavours, syringes filled with caramel and such at the ready to inject a gooey centre.
Congratulations Al’s Deli on your new opening, there’s no doubt the residents of Kingsland and visitors alike are more than happy to welcome you to the neighbourhood. And for those of you, like me, who insist on never leaving the couch, they still deliver… So get dialing.
