What Not To Miss At This Year's Pride Festival

Here at TUL we are celebrating with a very large Y E S as Auckland’s Pride Festival is officially back for 2018! Pop the vino and put on your disco pants—the line-up for this year's festival boasts two full weeks of inspiring antics and epic festivities. From black-tie extravaganzas to full-blown DJ sets and an infamous march set to unite Auckland City, here is everything you cannot afford to miss during Feb’s iconic Pride Festival.

Naturally, Pride and Peace is the theme for 2018. An idea which not only celebrates how far we’ve come as a country but recognises the ongoing sufferance's the global LGBTQIA+ community faces. For those of you unfamiliar with the event, the Auckland Pride Festival is all about peaceful protest—inviting anyone and everyone to take part.

Kicking things off in style is a best-of-the-fest black-tie extravaganza at Auckland’s Q Theatre. For those of you into showbiz, you need this event in your life. Here you’ll witness dramatic performances all evening long plus a myriad of guest appearances from rainbow community icons.

Next is the return of the Ending HIV Big Gay Out—an epic day of celebrations hosted by the New Zealand AIDS Foundation. Acts from MAALA to Openside will be jamming out on the main stage while the Big Gay Out Market Area features more than 100 stalls boasting delicious food, cold bevvys and other groovy goods. For those over 18, you’ve got your own dance tent and garden bar fitted with all the finest luxuries—Champagne anyone?

Arguably the most iconic event of the festival is the Rainbow Warriors' Pride Parade, where Ponsonby Road is transformed into a rainbow of colour in celebration of diversity and equality. Whip out that '80s fluro, there's never been a better time to flaunt that ol' school attire. Saving the best for last as per, the festival's closing celebration PROUD is pretty much just a giant frickin’ dance party. With some of the word’s most in-demand gay DJ’s such as Dan Slater, there’s everything from live music, burlesque acts, Brittany Spears remixes and everything in between. This is going to be goooooood.

So, to spread a little love this summer, this is where you must be.
