It’s almost May, guys. Yes, that’s right, May. Nobody panic, it was only Christmas like five minutes ago, but whatever. Here we are. So let’s embrace it, shall we? And really, the best way to do that is by getting around all the awesome things happening in Perth this month.

From honey festivals to pasta master-classes, Perth has got has got it going on. So get yo’ diaries, get yo’ calendars—here are the best events popping up in Perth this May.

Gelato My God #2

May 1, ChiCho Gelato, Northbridge

The guys at ChiCho Gelato have been coming up with some cool new ideas recently, but converting their gelato cart into a DJ booth is definitely their coolest yet. They kicked it off with Gelato My God #1 over Easter, and now they’re going for round two during Greek Orthodox Easter. (Yes, we Greeks have a different Easter to everyone else) ChiCho will have DJ talent on the decks, and will be bringing two Greek-inspired additions to their gelato cart, plus a very special Greek dessert. Christos Anesti, everyone!

Maylands Street Festival

May 1, The Rise, Maylands

The Maylands Street Festival, now is in its third year, brings you the ultimate hawker style market event. Described as a ‘mobile food court of joy’, the event is jam-packed with food vans, vendors and stalls, all selling you a selection of delicious savouries, sweets, snacks and drinks. Bring down your mates and a picnic blanket, and kick back listening to seriously good beats from local musicians all whilst enjoying tasty food that won’t break your budget.

The Honey Festival

May 1, 867 Great Northern Highway, Herne Hill

Do you love honey? That’s a stupid question isn’t it, everyone loves honey. But if you really, really, really love honey, to the extent where you might even want to start making your own, get to this year’s WA Honey Festival in the Swan Valley. There will be competitions for the best honey, a honey cake contest, food, drinks and live music. Plus, if you’re really serious, you can even find out how to become a bee-keeper.

Mount Hawthorn Streets And Laneways Festival

May 1, Mount Hawthorn

This boutique village-style street festival will again take over the streets and laneways of Mount Hawthorn from 11am til 7pm with market stalls, entertainment stages, pop-up street bars, street food, roving performers and family fun. Street festivals are the best!

Matt Corby

May 5, Riverside Theatre, Perth

Currently touring overseas, everyone’s favourite home-grown muso Matt Corby will finish up his US and Canadian tour (which sold out in five minutes, just quietly) before returning home to Aus. He’ll only be performing one show in Perth on May 5, so get in quick.

Cinco De Mayo Party

May 6, The Blue Flamingo, Leederville

Translating literally to ‘Five of May’, Cinco De Mayo is an annual event held where Mexico commemorates its army’s unlikely victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla in 1862. The Mexican-inspired drinking hole, The Blue Flamingo, will paying their own special tribute to the day, with a free event including tequila specials. Olé!

Pasta And Gnocchi Cooking Class

May 11, Taste Budds Cooking Studio, Perth

What better way to spend cool autumn nights than cooking up warming Italian food? The team at Taste Budds are running a pasta and gnocchi cooking class—and they learnt how to do it from Jamie Oliver’s mentor, Genarro Contaldo, so I’m going to say they know what they’re doing. The menu and sauces are decided on the day, depending on seasonality and the availability of quality produce at Perth City Farm. You will leave full of knowledge and full of carbs.

Potterheads Quiz Night

May 12, May 19, May 25, Jack Rabbit Slims, Northbridge

Calling all Harry Potter fans. It’s your time to shine. All that Hogwarts knowledge you’ve accumulated over the years will finally come in handy at this Harry Potter trivia night. There’s food, drinks and some pretty impressive prizes and treats. Get quizarding, muggles.

RSPCA WA Million Paws Walk

May 15, Sir James Mitchell Park, South Perth

Do something to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside and join the fight against animal cruelty. The RSPCA Million Paws Walk is a chance to raise funds for vital programs, services and campaigns undertaken by RSPCA WA, as well as supporting their daily battle to put a stop to animal cruelty. Plus, this year is their 20th anniversary, so to celebrate, you can pamper your pooch on the day at the VIP Pooch area.

Soulville Saturday Night Dance Party

May 21, Bubushka, Leederville

Soulville is back, my friends. Five hours of dancefloor-driven music from soul, R&B, funk and Latin DJs, spinning their beats the old-fashioned way—yep, you guessed it, on vinyl. The way it’s supposed to be. Dust off your dancing shoes and get down to Bubushka, upstairs at Leederville’s Bill’s Bar & Bites.

HBF Run For A Reason

May 22, Perth

All these eating and drinking events need to be offset with some exercise, don’t they? So why not get on board with the HBF Run For A Reason? You don’t even need to be a seasoned runner to do it, because they have 4km and 12km options. But if you do happen to be one those freaks of nature who is just an all-round supreme athlete, then just go right ahead and register for the half marathon. Whatever. I’m not jealous.

Sake To Me

May 25, Wok Street Chow House, Northbridge

The Wok Street Chow House is turning Japanese for one night of sake indulgence. Join them for five courses of Wok Street delights, paired with premium Japanese Sake. Kimono and slippers are optional.
