Winter Nail Colours To Try Now

Hellooooo, winter. The season everyone loves to hate has well and truly arrived. While not quite as fun and sassy as its pals spring and summer, it definitely doesn’t mean your beauty regime has to be anything close to blah. If you’ve found the recent cold snap has caused you to slack on your nail game, here’s a friendly little reminder that just because it’s not sandal and bikini weather, there’s no (zero, nada, zip) excuse to don a manky-mani.

When it comes to picking a polish for the colder months ahead, a general rule of thumb (nail) suggests you opt for shades that are a touch darker than what you might opt for during sunshine-filled seasons. While this just might be proven true, we can’t help but lust after shades that will be sure to brighten even the dreariest of winter mornings (if anyone has a shade of nail polish that makes scrolling through Instagrams and Snapchats of friends on European escapades somewhat bearable, we are all ears).

From trusty winter ruby reds to neutrals that are oh-so fresh and clean, we’ve rounded up the chicest, shiniest (and sometimes matte) shades to coat your tips this winter.

#1 Ruby Red

Match your digits to your fave glass of Pinot Noir. It’s an old favourite for good reason, the perfect deep winter red is a fail-proof hue to add polish to any winter outfit.

Try: OPI Nail Lacquer in Malaga Wine or Smith & Cult Nail Lacquer in Lovers Creep

#2 Mocha Cream

A new season update on your fresh, sheer spring-favourite shade of nude. Try a neutral shade that’s slightly deeper, creamier and a little warmer for the colder months. Think 90’s supermodel (or Kylie Jenner) lipstick-shade-nude.

Try: BUTTER London Patent Shine 10X Nail Lacquer in Tea Time

#3 Chrome

Channel clouds with silver linings with a touch of (sophisticated) shimmer. Swap powder grey shades for frosty gunmetal grey fingertips, a favourite on designer runways all around the globe this season.

Try: Ciate London Paint Pot in Glametal or Essie in No Place Like Chrome

#4 Winter White

Winter white nails are definitely still a thing, and an impossibly chic one at that. Contrast an all-black winter wardrobe with the freshest of white nails—just remember to finish with a generous top coat to avoid chalky looking fingertips that looks like you’ve painted them with liquid paper.

Try: OPI Nail Lacquer in Alpine Snow or if a stark white is a little too much for you, opt for a very pale nude that has a little more warmth yet is almost white, such OPI Nail Lacquer in Funny Bunny

#5 Military Green

Instead of coordinating you nails with your lip shade, try matching your fingertips with your fave winter bomber or military jacket (in khaki, obviously)… How far-shun of you.

Try: BUTTER London Patent Shine 10X Nail Lacquer in Khaki or Smith & Cult Nail Lacquer in Feed The Rich

#6 Grown-up Glitter

You’re never too old for a little glitter. Trade up your niece’s hot pink disco ball polish of choice for sequin-glitter top coats (we’re talking oversized glitter pieces here)—we’ve been inspired by Alexa Chung and Rihanna. If you wear silver jewellery or have fair skin, try a silvery glitter hue layered over dove grey and if you are olive skinned or opt for gold jewellery, try pairing a dusty rose or warm nude polish with a gold glitter.

Try: Nails Inc Nail polish in Alexa Sequins or OPI Nail Lacquer in Pirouette my Whistle

#7 Creamy Taupe

Take nail notes from a creamy latte on a chilly winter morning (delicious). Swap a baby pink or pastel spring hue for a creamy, tawny nude shade as the humidity drops. It’s another fresh take on a classic nude or baby pink that’ll always look clean and polished while complementing every winter jewel tone or print that you’re wearing.

Try: OPI Nail Lacquer in Don’t Bossanova Me Around or MECCA Cosmetica Artistry Nail Polish in Maria
