There’s been a lot happening in Perth since the last edition of this list. Like, a lot. From chocolate cafes and strudel joints to late night toasted sambo spots, here are 30 new restaurants, bars and cafes you need to get yourself to immediately.
Don’t you hate it when it’s 3am and you just want a darn toastie? Well now you can get one at Toast Cartel. This rad new spot off Freo’s cafe strip is grilling epic toasted sambos from 8am daily, using artisan breads and tasty seasonal fillings. And from Thursday to Saturday, they are open late—like, proper late. So if you want to wander in after tearing up the dance-floor at Benny’s, go for it. As if that wasn’t amazing enough, they also cater to the gluten and lactose intolerant folk. Seriously, someone just hand these guys a damn medal.
Imagine if there was a place dedicated to making crunchy strudel—oh, wait, you don’t need to imagine BECAUSE THERE FREAKING IS. Freddie Strudels has opened its doors in Northbridge and we could not be more excited about the plethora of pastry inside this place. Pay a visit to this Brisbane Street establishment and get your hands on one of their pastries filled with durian cream.
Zeus Street Greek Eats
You can never have enough Greek food, so that’s why we are super glad Zeus Street Greek has opened up on Beaufort Street. The team here specialises in modern Greek eats like fluffy pita filled with tender, melt-in-your-mouth meat, grilled halloumi and hot chips topped with oregano and feta cheese. Everything they use is made with high-quality Aussie ingredients, and you can eat there or get you’re your feast delivered straight to your door. What a time to be alive.
Chic Pea Vegan Cafe
This new spot in the Freo Markets will make you actually consider becoming a vegan. Yes, true story. They dish up a variety of vegan and gluten free burgers, quiches and sweet treats, as well a changing menu of hot dishes like warming winter curries and hearty soups.
Sorganic Sourdough Bakery
God we love bread, so we’re pretty happy there is a brand spanking new sourdough shop in this fair city of ours. Sorganic is an authentic artisan sourdough bakery, with all their breads naturally fermented for 72 hours using only organic flour, spring water and sea salt. If bread isn’t your jam (but why wouldn’t it be?) the guys here also offer a range of artisan foods, speciality coffee, handcrafted pastries and toasted mueslis.
Measure Dessert Bar
Masterchef fans will be pleased to know that former contestant Karmen Lu has opened a dessert bar on Beaufort Street. And while dessert alone is enough to make us giddy, desserts and dranks combined is just next-level excitement. A must-try for all you sugar-fiends out there.
If you're serious about delicious, freshly made pasta then you’re going to want to yourself to this new pasta joint in Mount Lawley. Solo Pasta offers classic, beetroot and spinach pasta, so once you've decided which flavour you want, you choose the length (they sell it by the metre—this could be dangerous…) Then you choose your sauce, with choices of tomato based sauces, cream bases or olive oil based.
Cherry and Grapes
Cherry and Grapes is here to delight all the West Perth office dwellers with great coffee, tasty meals and a stellar wine list. Their seasonal menu uses top quality local produce, with all dishes designed to share, so take your colleagues (if you like them.)
We think this might take the cake as Perth’s smallest cafe. This tiny hole in the wall spot has just opened up on Pakenham Street down the road from Bread in Common. Ghetto Blaster is open seven days a week and is dishing up superb coffee and snacks to the good people of Fremantle.
So apparently ‘posto’ means place and ‘matto’ means crazy or insane. So it’s a fitting name for a restaurant that claims it offers modern Italian with a quirky twist. This new eatery, which is sitting pretty on Osborne Park’s Main Street, offers incredible Italian fare as well as drinks using traditional Italian drops like Aperol, Campari and Negroni. Yum.
If coffee with a side of clothes shopping is your jam, then you’re going to want to try out this delightful new spot in North Freo. Ooh Coffee sits alongside clothing store Ooh La La, and serves up smooth and silky coffee from 6:30am every morning.
The Woodfired Baker
After doing the rounds at farmers markets and health food stores in Perth, The Woodfired Baker has finally opened its doors in Maylands. You won’t find anyone more passionate about making traditional bread, with the team here handcrafting artisan bread, pastries and organic, additive free sourdough.
The Office on Angove
This beautiful new cafe in North Perth is ready to make all your brunch dreams come true with their tasty meals and freshly baked brioche bun menu (yes, a menu dedicated to brioche.) if you don’t have time to stop, fret not, because they also do amazing takeaway snacks and superb coffee to go.
This brand new Asian-inspired cafe located in the heart Subiaco serves up everything from burgers to fried rice and nasi goreng. But obviously, you need to order the dish the restaurant is named after—the eggsluff. Their signature dish is pureed potato topped with a poached egg and herbs and served with toast. Give it a whirl.
Sitting pretty on Forrest Street is Subiaco's newest sweet eatery. Cherry Bombe specialises in fine food and cake, and offer a 'pret a manger' (translation: ready to eat) philosophy whereby you can just grab breakfast, lunch or a snack on the go. With a bevy of different pastries, sandwiches, savouries, sweets and cakes, you might have a hard time deciding.
Twig and Sparrow Cafe
This beautiful little suburban spot in Willetton is dishing up brekky, lunch, coffee and cakes like it's no-one’s business. If you’re not full after ordering their smashed avo on toast, try their strawberry and white chocolate cheesecake.
Fika on Brix
‘Fika’ is a Swedish custom that is all about taking a break to enjoy your coffee. We like the sound of that. So do the good people at Fika on Brix, who have embraced this work-day ritual in their gorgeous cafe. They serve up amazing sweets and cakes, and also happen to have a mouth-watering brunch menu. Go get your fika on.
Now that The Mantle is dishing up brunch as well as dinners, we don’t see any reason to ever leave the establishment. The Mantle Harvester has got all your brekky-lunch bases covered, with options such as the ‘Health in a Bowl’ (a rice bowl with egg, local quinoa, kimchi and tahini) to jerk-fried chicken waffles with maple syrup, and buckwheat pancakes with honey and bacon.\
Operating alongside the Mantle Harvester, Brewhouse is Perth's first kombucha bar and is brought to us by the guys behind Kommunity Brew. With four brews on tap, you know what you need to order alongside your breakfast!
What The Bao
Due to the ever-popular demand for their tasty bao at Freo Markets, the team behind What The Bao had no choice but to open an eatery in the middle of the CBD. What The Bao in Shafto Lane is serving up their delicious Asian fusion combinations like Thai sweet chilli fish, roasted duck and Japanese fried chicken, all wrapped up in a soft bao bun.
Ever wondered what a Japanese x French inspired bakery would look like? Nope, we haven’t either. But the people behind Raisin’ have, and that’s what they’ve created. This new spot on Onslow Street is dishing up freshly baked bread and pastry using house-brewed yeast cultivated from raisins. We’re intrigued.
East Victoria Park
The people at Pietro are bringing the best of traditional Sicilian gelato to Perth, serving gelato, coffee, granita and gelato cakes, made with traditional and artisanal techniques. They churn their unique recipes daily, using fresh and natural ingredients with no flavourings or artificial additives. And because they know we love options, they serve their gelato in a cone, cup, stick, take away pack or AS A CAKE!!
Threeo Coffee and Eats
A beautiful little juice bar will soon be gracing the streets of the CBD. Juice Station is set to open its doors in June 2017 and will be providing 100 per cent pure and raw cold pressed juices to the people of Perth.
The first restaurant to launch the new Springs Rivervale development, Springs Kitchen will be opening at Perth's newest hotel, Aloft, on 26 May. Open from early until late, punters can expect fresh, local produce from chef Giovanni Di Serio who's worked at the helm of a Michelin Starred restaurant in Europe. Get excited folks!
Coming soon to Fremantle is healthy hot spot, Cos Baby. Joining the collection of awesome eateries on Pakenham Street, Cos Baby Freo will be dishing out all sorts of healthy eats like raw slices, fresh juices, colourful salads and tasty grab and go breakfasts.
The Broody Hen Coffee Shop
This new cafe is set to open its doors any day now on Fremantle’s James Street, providing local speciality coffee and homemade food. Keep your eyes peeled.
Rosso Nero Pizza
From the guys behind neighbourhood Pizza, Rosso Nero is set to open in Maylands some time in the near future and we can't wait.
After finding its way through a sea of red tape, Lyric Lane, the proposed wine bar, cafe and music venue, is set to begin construction in Maylands. This epic multi-storey venue is fixed to make its home where the old Speedlite bike shop on Guilford Road used to be. It will house a cafe/bar on the ground floor and have a basement set aside for cool things like comedy and live music. Drop the mic.
