Pepper Lunch | The Verdict

Since popping up in Mount Lawley’s coolest new laneway in January, I’ve visited Pepper Lunch six times—so you can trust me when I say that this shiz is bananas!

A concept originally hailing from Japan, Pepper Lunch is perfect for all those DIY dining fanatics, or just anyone who likes to eat delicious things.

What is DIY dining, you say? Well, it’s basically cooking your own dinner without the hassle of going to the grocery store, prepping the ingredients and washing up. It’s the fun part of cooking, delivered direct to your table!

At Pepper Lunch, everything is served on a piping hot 260 degree teppan (hot plate) ready for you to mix it up to your liking, adding as much sweet or garlic sauce (or both) as your heart desires.

Having visited this steamy little restaurant so many times, you would think I would have tried all of the things, but—once I’m onto something good, I tend to stick to it—so I’ve only tried the salmon pepper rice and the signature beef pepper rice. #foodiefail

Both dishes are served with Pepper Lunch’s unique margarine, corn and…you guessed it…loads of roasted black pepper—but the pros know to add on!

Cheese is always a good idea and it goes oh so well with the salmon pepper rice, melting the rice into delicious cheesy clumps, and the kimchi takes the signature beef pepper rice to a whole new level. You can also add on egg, corn, onion, mushroom, extra butter and sauce. Add away we say!

Pepper Lunch have also got a range of sides for you to enjoy while your meal is sizzling, including chips, miso soup and shake salads, and if you’re feeling extra hungry you can upsize your pepper rice—though I always leave feeling stuffed with just the regular size.

Just a word of warning: while you’ll want to tuck into your rice as soon as the meat is cooked to your liking, we advise waiting a few extra minutes otherwise your tongue will spontaneously combust!
