It’s July, which means it’s cold, it’s dark when we leave the office and we might just have to start using our umbrellas. But the good news is Perth is turning it on this month with events that are not only awesome but also FREE.
From wine tastings and chocolate festivals, to Chrissie in July and bonfires, here are the best free events happening in Perth this July.
Canada Day At Baby Mammoth
Northbridge, Saturday 1 July
Did you know this year marks Canada’s 150th birthday? No, we didn’t either but the good people at Baby Mammoth did. And they are celebrating in true Canadian style. If you want to join, be sure to ready your bellies for all the Canadian beer, bacon, maple-flavoured everything and the FOUR KINDS OF POUTINE. Yes, four. (For those playing at home: poutine is French fries, topped with cheese curd, topped with gravy. Basically, everything that is good in the world.) Canada Day At The Aviary
Perth, Saturday 1 July
The Aviary is also bringing the canucks for Canada Day celebrations. Whether you’re a Canadian expat or just a lover of all things Canada, join them for their rooftop party from 11am to get stuck in to some traditional food, including (huge) serves of poutine, chilli maple chicken burgers, Canadian bacon pizza and a Beavertail dessert bar. They’ll also be serving up Canadian drink specials such as Bloody Caesars (a Canadian Bloody Mary), Canadian Clubs and Molsen Canadian beer. Lot 20 is really delivering in the free events arena, and their Great Southern Cellar Door series is no exception. Some of our State’s leading wine producers will be visiting this friendly little Northbridge bar, and you get the chance to have a chat with the winemakers, enjoy complimentary wine tastings AND nibble on free bar snacks. From vegan creations and organic produce to eco-friendly and dairy free delights, Perth City Farm's Twilight Festival is one for the sustainable food artisans. With delectable food stalls, local musos and arts and crafts, there's a plethora of events and offerings as Perth City Farm presents a winter edition of its Twilight Festival. Live Painting Sessions

Go get inspired by some of Perth's best creative minds at an in-house art sessions at Ivy League. Resident artists Jess Swan and Colours by Kate will be working their magic with the paintbrushes right there in front of you (no pressure, guys) to show exactly how their masterpieces are created. And, if you feel like indulging while you get inspired, Ivy League are dishing up a dessert special for the occasion—a Hot Fudge dish, just what you need on a cold winter night. Don’t pretend your eyes didn’t light up when you read there is a CHOCOLATE MARKET and it’s FREE (to attend). The Esplanade Hotel is hosting this joyous and delicious day celebrate everybody’s favourite food. From 10am to 4pm, there will be chocolate market stalls providing tastings, a DIY hot chocolate station, goodies to buy and take home if you so choose, and the Esplanade’s own restaurants and bars offering special chocolate dishes. Kraken: A Mid Winter’s Blaze
Fremantle, Saturday 22 July
If setting stuff on fire is your jam, then you’ll want to get around this event by Blazing Swan Inc. and the City of Fremantle. A giant bonfire on the sand of Bathers Beach—because really, what better way to warm up in the middle of winter than with a big-ass fire? The Bather’s Beach precinct will come alive for a Freo winter sunset, food stalls and drink stands, all centred around a kraken effigy which will be set ablaze and burnt to the ground.
