Our long awaited summer season is finally upon us, and as first off the ranks of the warmer months, December is packed full of festive fun to be had. It appears that every venue in Perth has been hiding more than a few cards up their sleeve ready to hit it big on the first few weekends of summer, in true Perth style.

Between wine parties, music festivals and pop-up bars to summer markets, carpark parties and a healthy dose of Christmas cheer, your calendar is going to be so full this month you may even forget about the big day itself. Here's what's on in Perth this December.

South Beach Sunset Markets At South Beach | Every Saturday Night In December

Fremantle

Returning for a long summer of sunsets on the beach, the South Beach Sunset Markets kick off this month with a bang. Choose your dinner from more than 30 amazing international food stalls, and devour it while live music and entertainment rings out in the background. These markets are quintessential Perth summer—complete with a beachside pop-up bar.

Sunday Music At Fremantle Arts Centre | Every Sunday In December

There’s no better way to wind down a weekend than at FAC’s weekly Sunday Music, enjoying live tunes from an array of artists in the art-hub’s beautiful front garden, picnic rug in tow. For the love of summer, make sure you don’t miss the Fremantle Folk Festival happening this month across Princess May Park and Clancy’s Fish Pub. Pineapple Club Season Opener At Gloucester Park | 1 December

Kick off summer right by dancing the night away in a giant pineapple playground, as this Season Opening Pineapple Club takes of the Gloucester grounds. Shop vintage this month at The Dressing Room Markets, a collection of stall holders selling genuine retro and vintage designer clothing, jewellery and accessories. This monthly affair is free to browse, and you can pull up in the Rosie’s beer garden to refresh when you tire of hunting.

Human Rights Pop-Up Festival | 9 December

It’s been 70 years since we established the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and Perth’s new human rights hub, the Museum of Freedom and Tolerance, is putting on a Pop-Up Festival to celebrate. They’ll be taking over Yagan Square with multicultural dance performances, play spaces, art workshops and fun for everyone. 

World Human Rights Day: Celebrating Activists At Centre For Stories | 10 December

Hear amazing stories of activism at Centre For Stories’ World Human Rights Day event, in which three inspiring human beings come together to share stories of fighting for rights across Iraq, Australia and Kenya. It’s a free event but RSVP is essential, so lock your spot in if you want to mark this very special day on the 70thAnniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. 

The Dock Returns At B Shed | 13—31 December

In music to everyone’s ears, our favourite port-side pop-up party The Dock is back at B Shed for another summer season full of fine brews and delicious eats. The fun kicks off this month with live music and DJs setting the vibe, beers from the likes of Otherside Brewing Co. and Gage Roads (among many others) and food from taste-makers like Baolicious. You know they don’t anchor here long, so be sure to enjoy the fun while it lasts. 

Dan Sultan At The Rosemount | 13 December

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Dan Sultan is bringing his mesmerising solo show to the Rosie, covering tunes from all of his albums, some new surprises and a bank of emotions. It’ll be his only show in Perth, and we suggest securing your spot ASAP.

Summer Festival At Ice Cream Factory | 14 – 31 December

Ice Cream Factory’s infamous Summer Festival is back this month over three massive weeks, bringing some big names and super-charged parties to the stage for our enjoyment. Seven stages, thirteen bars, a silent disco, VIP decks and sun lounges plus the all-important insane line-up of international and local artists make this the official summer fun factory. There’s fifteen nights of partying to do—everything from Banana Social and One Day Sundays to The Racquet Club and MELT, plus very special Bar Pop Xmas Eve and NYE parties. Beyond that, big acts like BROODS are putting on shows, while DJ sets from the likes of Cut Copy and Art Vs Science keep things ticking over something large. 

Paper Mountain x PEAKS Present Art Party At Paper Mountain | 15 December

Celebrate the upcoming season of PEAKS at Fringe World Festival by joining the Art Party at Paper Mountain. For those not in the know, PEAKS is Paper Mountain’s Fringe program that showcases exciting work from some of WA’s cutting-edge emerging artists—everything from activations and exhibitions to live art and performance. Expect a taste of this at the party, plus live music, cheap drinks, karaoke and a bunch of prizes to be won. 

Carols By Candlelight At Fremantle Oval | 16 December

‘Tis the season to be jolly, and by that we mean sing your heart out even if you can’t hit a note. Do so at Freo’s community Carols by Candlelight, complete with live music to accompany your fine vocals, delicious food and free entertainment (that is, if you’re not entertained enough by your own attempts at reaching some of those carol-ific notes).

Noah Dillon Summer Party With Miraud & Tanaya Harper At The Aardvark | 21 December

Freo’s newest dedicated live music venue is carrying into summer with a massive party put on by local music-man Noah Dillon. With support from alt-folk Nika Mo, songwriter queen Tanaya Harper and one-stop-bop-shop Miraud, this one’s bound to be a goodie.

Boxing Day Carpark Party At The Bird | 26 December

Makers of movement Kolinga are back in action to bring us the ultimate Boxing Day party—a good ol’ Carpark Party out the back of The Bird. With a few music selectors putting on their very best tunes for music lovers, you’ll be dancing, drinking and celebrating summer in no time.

Friend Love Best Love At Mojos Bar | 30 December

It’s been a helluva year, and we’re sure you’ve enjoyed it with friends by your side. Friend Love Best Loveis an ode to friendship complete with local DJs—namely, the debut live show from DJ Chipslut—visual projections and an art exhibition featuring the work of emerging local artists.
