I’m going to go right out there and say it—there aren’t many good things about winter. I could list all the good things about summer fairly easily, that’s a no brainer. But good things about winter? That’s considerably harder, because what silver lining is there in rain, dreariness, grey skies, cold nights and dark mornings? Not to mention that during winter, it takes wild horses to get you out of your hot steamy shower in the morning, so your water bill, along with your general feelings of gloominess, starts to skyrocket. (I’m not being pessimistic guys. I’m just getting real with y’all.)
But, having said all this, there is one good thing about winter, and that is a delicious, warming and toasty bowl of hot porridge. Oh yes. There is your silver lining, and a damn good reason to get out of your hot steamy shower.
So make like Goldilocks and get to some of these Perth porridge hot spots stat.
Ootong & Lincoln
On a chilly winter’s morning, go warm up at Ootong & Lincoln with their white maize porridge. It’s served with apple and rhubarb compote and topped with crunchy nut clusters. Maybe winter isn’t so bad after all…
The guys at Aliment also dish up an a-maize-ing white maize porridge (see what I did there?). The porridge here is served with orange and pear compote and almond praline.
May Street Larder
The team at May Street Larder will keep you nice and toasty with their warm quinoa and chia porridge, made with honey, almond milk, nashi pear and sprouted buckwheat. Plus, if you ask really nicely, they might even let you add some of their Cocowhip toppings to your porridge—like raw Nutella, raw chocolate or vegan caramel. Now there are some very tasty reasons to get out of your warm shower.
The Ladder Cafe & Deli
A delightful little place on Scarborough Beach Road, The Ladder Cafe & Deli serves up a steamy bowl of super berry oats to keep you cosy. It's creamy porridge topped with walnuts, cranberries, goji berries, raw cacao nibs, chia seeds, fresh strawberries and a drizzle of local honey. Oh my goodness. Is there a better reason to rug up and leave the house? I think not.
The porridge at Oxford Yard, soon to hit their winter menu, is both delicious and nutritious. A coconut quinoa porridge mix, served with seasonal fruit compote and toasted almond flakes. That’ll keep you warm all day long.
A great little cafe on Collie Street, Yocal is the perfect place to get a warming winter feed, and their porridge with berry coulis and seed and nut mix is sure to hit the spot.
If you’re a bit chilly on a winter’s morning, why don’t you try this on for size—a steaming hot bowl of rolled oats made with milk, brown sugar, cinnamon and real vanilla beans, topped with apple and blueberry compote and pistachios. For those who want to add some decadence to their day, the porridge from Typika also comes with a side of cream. You need some extra padding to keep you warm in winter, right?
This cosy little spot in leafy suburban Applecross is the perfect place to curl up with something warm—like their coconut and buckwheat porridge, for instance, served with apple, blueberry compote, honey and almond flakes. Yes please, Cioccolato Espresso, yes please.
