There’s a quote that goes something along the lines of “there’s no such thing as a person who hates reading. There are people who love reading, and people who are reading the wrong book”.
Here at Metropolist HQ we’ve always loved losing ourselves in books, but we’ve also seen a change in peeps who loathe to read when they find a page-turner that sucks them in. Oh the power of the written word.
It’s all well and good to go hunting around online for your next book to devour but be mindful that you’re entering an overflowing vortex. Which is why we still have a love affair with a good ol’ fashion book store. Yeah it may cost a few cents more to buy from a real person, but you’re also likely to buy the right book and get real, in-person recommendations, which in our eyes are priceless.
We may not have the biggest bookstores on the Sunshine Coast, but what they lack in size they make up for in heart and personality.
Check out our fave six bookstores on the Sunshine Coast, and go find yourself something to whisk you away.
The River Read
Tucked along Gympie Terrace within hawking distance of Noosa River, The River Read is the go-to bookstore for Noosa locals. This is what we like to call the slow-shopping experience. It’s likely you’ll spend at least half an hour perusing the book-heavy shelves and stands, so don’t come armed with a whinging wingman or this could tip them over the edge. Only made your way through half the stock? Take a breather with a housemade coffee in the sun before heading back in for round two.
Where: Shop 2, 203 Gympie Terrace

Berkelouw Book Barn
Everybody needs a BerkelouW for a bookstore. Seriously, have you been here? Sharing its space with new releases, hard-to-find imports and truckloads of secondhand books, as well as gifts and a café, BerkelouW is literally a one-stop shop. If you walk out empty-handed there’s something seriously wrong with you. We don’t know what exactly, but it’s there.

Rosetta Books Maleny
If your perfect day consists of heading up to the hinterland for a picnic with bags full of tasty morsels and a book to read in between mouthfuls and food coma naps, you’re our kinda person. But because we’re like you, there’s also a chance that you may have forgotten the page turner you’d planned on wiling away the afternoon with. And that’s why we’re introducing you to Rosetta Books. Found in the heart of Maleny, this stunning shop is easily one of the best bookstores on the Sunshine Coast. Visit and you’ll see why.

Duporth Book Exchange
If like us, you love the musty smell of old books, and see walking into a second-hand bookstore as a treasure-hunt instead of an unnecessary chore, then the Duporth Book Exchange is the friend you can’t survive without. It’ll have your back when you’re after a bit of gritty crime to shake up the day, or when a break-up makes you want lose yourself in a soppy romance. With shelves that are constantly bowed from the weight of thousands of titles, don’t try and duck in and out on a lunch break. It won’t happen.
Where: 3 Ocean Street, Maroochydore
Annie’s Books on Peregian
This bookshop may be small but it actually works in Annie’s favour. Rather than stuffing shelves with paperbacks just to fill the space, each book has been carefully selected in hope that you will find the one you’re meant to take home. There’ll be no hot flushes because you won’t stress out guessing where to look. See we told you, small is good. Not always, but in this case, yes.

Nambour Book Exchange
One of Queensland’s biggest book exchanges, there’s no way we could leave this one off the list. With a status like that, it’s obvious why Nambour Book Exchange is up there with the best bookstores on the Sunshine Coast. Home to more than 200,000 books, both new and not-so-new, these guys know what’s in-store, so if you’re looking for something specific make sure you let ‘em know.
