Winter is coming and thankfully the food formula for staying warm isn’t too difficult to figure out. We’ve put together a list of the carb, cheese and slow cooked goodies that will keep you toasty warm all through winter. And here’s which Sydney restaurants you can get them from (if you can handle leaving the warmth of your home).

  1. Kicking off the list with a carb heavy dish that’ll keep you warm (and full) is the Canederli di Spinaci bread dumplings from La Rosa
  2. And because you can never go wrong with baked eggs, Dear Delicious’ take on them is worth a mention.
  3. The first of many pie references: The Pie Tin. Pick something (anything) off the menu and feel the warmth take hold.
  4. Manjit’s at the Wharf’s signature lamb shoulder anark ali curry is signature for a reason.
  5. Head down Spice Alley in Chippendale for a steaming bowl of ramen from KYO-TO.
  6. Crusty bread dipped in spicy shakshuka and oozy eggs from Shuk Café should do the trick.
  7. The warm blackberry and almond pudding with vanilla sauce from Rockpool Bar and Grill. Stop drooling!
  8. For the vegetarians, CHISWICK does a mean spinach and ricotta lasagne.
  9. Bondi Hardware’s baked artichoke dip with charred sourdough dippers is the perfect start, middle and end to your meal.
  10. Pick your heat with Butter’s fried chicken with hot sauce. Go on, order the HOT AF sauce. We dare you.
  11. The BBQ duck dumplings with spicy kim chi sauce from Della Hyde will warm you right up.
  12. I’ve never found a problem (or cold chill) that chocolate and carbs can’t fix. Enter: Sonoma bakery’s pain au chocolat.
  13. Foxy autumn porridge with an optional dollop of clotted cream from Bread and Circus. As if it’s even a question: order the cream.
  14. Crisp pizza dough filled with molten cheese and double smoked ham at Salt Meats Cheese. Come to mama Calzone Classico!
  15. The mere thought of the beef, beer and bacon pie with cheesy mash from Bourke Street Bakery is enough to warm even the coldest of us.
  16. Anything from the Alchemy Elixir Range at Orchard Street Elixir Bar
  17. Steaming bowls of broth with fresh meat and vegetables. The pho from Pho PHD in Marrickville will warm you right up.
  18. El Topo’s slow cooked beef short rib. You know you want it.
  19. The cuteness of the corn lollipops at Mejico is enough to warm that cold heart right up.
  20. Five-grain porridge from Bondi Wholefoods won’t give you any of the carb guilts.
  21. Buuuut we can’t say the same for the buttermilk pancakes from Laneway Café Cammeray #YOLO
  22. The xiao long baos from Din Tai Fung will soothe your soul.
  23. So will the ramen from Ramen Ikkyu
  24. Oh hey, Bill. Your quinoa, amaranth and buckwheat porridge has my name all over it.
  25. To drum home the whole “liquid cheese will warm you up” thing, Barista & Cook’s grilled mac ‘n’ cheese toastie is on point.
  26. The smoky and spicy black beans at Three Williams are the stuff of winter dreams.
  27. Steak and mushroom pies at The Potting Shed. Are you counting? That’s three (yes three) pies so far.
  28. Kin By Us had us at kim chi waffles filled with juicy wagyu patties and LOTS of smoked cheese.
  29. Nomad’s wood roasted suckling pig. So. Much. Yes.
  30. The hearty goodness of Amma’s dal at INDU will heat things right up.
  31. Italian stews were made for winter nights and Otto’s Orecchiette ‘Osso Bucco’ should do the trick.
  32. The devil’s breakfast from Porch and Parlour will keep you warm. Chorizo seems to have that affect on people.
  33. The Boathouse On Blackwattle Bay do a mean (and wonderfully warming) snapper pie.
  34. Catalina nails fancy comfort food with their pan-roasted quail with celeriac puree.
  35. Curry is another failsafe winter warmer. Give China Doll’s Penang curry of slow braised wagyu beef shin a go.
  36. You can’t go wrong with Mr Wong’s king prawn wontons in supreme broth.
  37. Eat all of the meats at 678 Sydney. Cooking meats over charcoal is sure to heat you up.
  38. The coolest kind of warmth from Luis Tans’ wild Port Lincoln mussels in coconut curry.
  39. Thick and gooey green pea risotto from Riley Street Garage does it for us!
  40. The Incinerator Cafe’s slow cooked pork shoulder with braised cavolo nero is what slow cooked dreams are made of.
  41. All of the roast vegetables in Revolver Café’s big veggie breakfast.
  42. Kazbah Balmain has a whole barley porridge with all of the good stuff. By ‘good stuff’ I mean date compote, obviously.
  43. The Stuffed Beaver’s classic poutine will get you hot under the collar.
  44. And so will the loaded (double fried) fries at The Milk Bar by Cafe Ish
  45. Mexican breakfast staple huevos divorciados from Reuben Hills will make the morning chills go away.
  46. Pasta served in a cheese wheel! You just get us Buffalo Dining Club
  47. One more pasta dish for good measure. The spelt pappardelle One Ford Street is the right kind of stuff-you-silly meal.
  48. Pub pies are so damn comforting. We want to curl up in the flaky pastry of Pub Life Kitchen’s pie.
  49. You can’t go wrong with a warming bowl of laksa from Albee’s Kitchen
  50. Warm yourself up from the inside out with a Mr Crispy toasted cheese sandwich from The Stinking Bishops. You won’t regret it.

Just need to escape Sydney? Try these winter adventures.
