To be perfectly honest, we’re spoilt for choice in Sydney when it comes to hair salons. So, with that in mind, we strongly believe that you should never have to leave your hood to have your tresses tended to, if you so choose. Edgy cuts, dainty baby lights and thoughtful touch ups are on the cards when you visit one of these Inner West salons.
Stevie English Hair
Specialising in sustainable practices and kick arse colours, Stevie English Hair was born on the idea to build a cool and unique hair salon that would have minimal impact on the environment. That is exactly what they deliver, driving ‘green’ innovation and even coming recommended by the Lord Mayor. From classic cuts and colours, to brightly hued and edgy new ‘dos, this salon caters to everyone, no matter your preference or mood.
Audrey & Him
To last 15 years in the trendy Sydney suburb of Newtown, Audrey & Him have created an elegant salon, designed with the client’s every desire in mind. Nothing is off limits here, with individuality and beauty in all of its forms celebrated with thorough service and the expertise of their senior stylists. Audrey & Him is tucked away in a quiet cul-de-sac, so it’s the perfect place to head for a quick respite in the middle of your day without straying too far from the busy Newtown high street.
DD&Co are the hair colouring specialists who won't baulk at your request for blonde, black, white or pink hair—because life is far too short for boring hair. Their salon keeps it real, with exposed brick walls, a large American flag and cosy brown leather couch as relaxed accents that will make you feel right at home. They only use premium products and are firm believers in the magic of Olaplex (aren't we all), so you know you and your hair will be in very capable hands, even if you decide to do a full 180 on your current colour.
Head Over Heels
In one of the more controversial statements against shoes, head over heels prioritises heads (and specifically, hair) over heels, which makes sense since they are one of Sydney’s favourite hair salons. Head Over Heels is a dynamic salon that focused on tailoring your look to suit your needs, rather than simply what’s in fashion at the moment. Lead by editorial stylist and educator, Nathan Gorman, together with John Tay, the curated team of talented colourists, cutters and stylists are always on hand to give you the hair of your dreams.
Combining all of our favourite hair things in one place, ACADÈMIE Salon is an Annandale favourite with a team of passionate and highly skilled stylists who use only the most premium of premium products. The salon itself is modern and minimalist, with a monochromatic décor that places your hair on centre stage. Editorial is undoubtedly their ‘thing’ and the words that come to mind are whimsy, glamour and effortless, which are all good things in our books.
If you love a little bit of peace and quiet while you have your hair done, then Winnie Mac is the place for you, since this one man show will give you the personalised treatment that you crave. The boutique salon is by Jordan Winzer, who is a lover of long balayage goodness and short, textured hair cuts. He has created a chilled out space where you can dodge the traditionally loud and bustling salons, and instead sit back with a cup of tea while he works his magic on your tired old hair.
Stanley & Co. Hair Salon & Barber Shop
Owner of Stanley & Co., Jo has an ethos that honestly, all hairdressers should live by and that is to make every client feel that they have control over how they look. Simple, right? They take their art very seriously and pride themselves on building a real relationship with all of their clients, so you feel comfortable enough to tell them what you love, and also what you really hate. I dare you to scroll through their Instagram feed and not book yourself an appointment within 10 minutes.
Noddy’s on King
Noddy’s is the real deal folks, since they have taken home the prestigious award for Hairdresser of the Year five times. Fittingly, they’re regulars on the pages of fashion magazines and the runways at the world’s fashion weeks. Their talents are as eclectic and wide reaching as their King Street location and clients are regularly seen leaving with anything from bright orange hair, chopping bobs and pixie cuts. Don’t even get us started on the creamy blondes frequenting their Insta feed. We can’t even.
