Ah Sydney. Another month, another list of epic places guaranteed to make your life a whole lot better. And FYI June is looking pretty damn impressive.
Let’s just say, there are some major contenders for this month’s best new restaurants with all the latest from our O.G faves (here’s looking at you food and wine), to blow dry bars and even tea bars. We’ve waited almost half a year for these (highly anticipated) bad boys so we’re kind of freaking out right now (and you should be too).
Here are the very best new openings we’re excited about this June!
Heads up, the top floor of the Rose of Australia Hotel has had a pretty schmick makeover and just on the down low (but probably not for long), it’s bloody amazing. Sydney, we give you your latest boozy addition: Howard’s Cantina. With a retro fit-out (think cute picnic tables and neon signs) this new inner-west gem is the next place you need to bring the crew to. Because you’ll be friend-of-the year when your squad gets their mitts on the insanely good share menu with whey-braised lamb shoulder and potato mash with three types of fat. And don’t even get us started on the cocktail situation.
Ok guys, this is not a drill. Sydney now has a brand spankin’ new blow dry bar. And not just any kind, we mean the kind that serves up more than an Instaworthy blow dry. Blown Lux (AKA the latest glam mecca to hit Sydney) offers everything from messy waves to straight laced, and early morning coffees to cheeky midday bubbles (oh yes, you read that right). And if we’re completely honest, their cheese and wine selection is about as delicious as you’ll feel after the epic team here blow dries your mop to #hairgoals perfection.
Momo Bar Manly
Look, we can’t really fault a dumpling and poke bar. And we’ll have you know that Momo is already causing a bit of a (tasty) stir. Which ends up being no surprise when you find out that this new kid on the block is churning out perfect little herb and spice parcels of Nepalese steamed goodness. Plus, just to add to the excitement, our fave Hawaiian rainbow bowls just happen to be on the menu too. These guys have thought of everything.
You’ll find this one squeezed into the Marriott and decked out with 120 seats (so it’s kind of a big deal). Silvesters is the new, super modern fancy place you need to take yourself to when you’re feeling, well you know, fancy. This one is packed with some good ol’ Aussie produce (shout out to the Byron Bay Berkshire pork belly), plus a glorious menu studded with 90 wines. And FYI an open kitchen is always a good idea.
T Totaler @ The Galeries
Yep, the rumours are true. T Totaler has opened in the heart of the city and this is everything you need to know; there are over 30 signature tea blends (can confirm, they’re ALL delicious); you’ll find a heap of cold brew tea options as well, along with tea lattes that are a thick and creamy heaven-like affair here; Did we mention tea-tails are also a thing here? And pink fairy floss-topped French earl grey tea hot chocolate—also a bloody good thing here. Can you tell we’re excited? Good.
Oh. Yes. They. Did. That’s right, the super famous duo behind Sydney’s beloved wood wick soy candles have set-up shop full of these beauties and we’re low-key freaking out. Yep, if adulting is on your list of things to do this year (and it should be) then you’ll know that your one-way ticket to adulthood is getting on the candle-decor bandwagon. Especially when they smell of freshly brewed coffee, French pear, or champagne and strawberries, the cutest matte coloured jars make them a totally justifiable and highly necessary purchase too.
Barlow & Co
If a Texan snack pack isn’t on your #2017bucklist well it damn well should be. Barlow & Co (yep the same one that has been plating up at the Canterbury foodie market) now has its own takeaway shop. This means fatty lamb shoulder, pulled pork and brisket all day errryday (except Mondays) and before you even ask—yes, the meat is slow-cooked for a sizzling 16 hours. You’ll also get to choose from fish and chips or a Moroccan chickpea burger because, you know, choice.
Yebisu Bar + Grill
Because no city can have too many izakaya eateries! Serving up some of the tastiest Japanese fare around is Yebisu Bar + Grill and just so you know, everyone is giving it a massive thumbs up. Apart from it’s groovy interior, expect to be ordering up a major sharesies feast (so bring back-up). And heads up, there’s a sake wagon that moves around the restaurant.
We may or may not have saved the best until last here. ICYMI our faithful and truly admired The Grounds is making a move towards the city with an open-style kitchen serving up a brasserie-style menu (all day looooooong) and a whoooooole lot of caffeine for the corporate folk of Sydney. And obviously, the more Grounds in our life, the better.
