Sydney is very quickly becoming a vegan paradise—watch out Melbourne, we’re coming for you. In today’s vegan news we’ve just had word that a three-week pop-up is coming to Newtown’s The Midnight Special. They’ve handed over the keys to vegan food company Alfie’s Kitchen and they’ll be serving up nightly treats and even a Sunday banquet.
This is your chance to eat allllll of the things you miss from your days as a meat eater, with their take on a BBQ, which will see you devouring fried eggplant skewers with sticky sauce, in three seconds flat. You’ll then move onto the Alfie’s burger, with a juicy lentil patty and all of the trimmings—think lettuce, tomato, onion jam, aioli and zingy mustard pickles.
If you’d prefer fancier fare, then you’ll be all over the smashing pumpkin dip, which is spooned onto crunchy sesame crackers and served with the miso caramel of your dreams. Make sure you leave room for the soft shell tacos, filled to the brim with cauliflower puree, and chipotle spiked beans, all deliciously served with mandatory guac and salsa.
Now, we also know that you’re a thirsty bunch, so we’ll fill you in on just a couple of the cocktails (arguably the best bit). There’s the little red corvette, a combination of lemon myrtle infused gin, with raspberry compote and spiced agave, or the figeroni fig with ginger infused rye whiskey, Campari and Amaro Averna, served on the rocks with an orange twist.
Prepare to leave with a full belly, a warm buzz (thanks to the cocktails, obvs) and ready to head back again the next night to try the rest of the menu. We don’t blame you.
