Australia’s Most Stunning BBQ Spots For Sundowners

By Rachel Lay - 27 Sep 2017

Best picnic spots Australia

We live in a seriously stunning country, and while there hasn’t been an official vote we think our fair shores take the crown for being some of the most beautiful in the world. If you’re anything like us, you’d agree that the best way to enjoy our breath-taking country is by taking time out and sitting back with a loaded cheese platter, grapes, your best friends, and a cold drink in hand.

So, we've teamed up with our good friends at Johnnie Walker (who've just released our new fave drink, Johnnie & Ginger: a delightfully refreshing pairing of Johnnie Walker and ginger ale - totally perfect for weekend picnics, FYI) to bring you a round-up of the best BBQ spots to visit this summer.

Stop what you're doing, text your bestie, and organise a seriously memorable weekend hang to these ridiculously stunning spots.

New South Wales

South Head

South Head is b-e-a-u-tiful. There is literally no better place to opt for sundowners and chill with your best friends this weekend than this spot. With a stunning view straight out across the ocean, plenty of shady spots to shake out your picnic rug, and a plethora of walking tracks should you need to stretch out the ‘ol legs, we're sure there is no where else we'd rather be.

Little Manly Beach

If you’re a Sydney-local there is no doubt you’ve spent many a sunny afternoon whiling away the day at Little Manly Beach. Gather your squad and head down to the shore with your fave selection of cheeses, dranks, and barbeque goodies for a solid day of fun. Drinks, a BBQ, and a game of Heads Up sounds like a perfect summer weekend to us.

Centennial Park

For a stunning weekend barbeque spot without having to stray too far from the city you really can’t beat Centennial Park. This huuuge park is scattered with barbecues so you can take your pick before setting up for the day. This is our fave spot for people watching and general lazing in the sun. Add an esky full of drinks and you're pretty much set.

Victoria

Alexandra Gardens

Alexandra Gardens are all about location, location, location. This beauty of a park sits on the Yarra foreshore with sweeping views of Federation Square and the CBD. The barbeques here have serious river frontage so wake up early and nab yourself a prime spot. Epic views? Check. Your best mates? Check. An esky full of drinks? Check, check, and check!

Yarra Bend Park

Yarra Bend Park is as close as you can really get to the bush while remaining within the city bounds. If you (somehow) haven’t made it out to Yarra Bend Park yet, you’ll find a babbling creek, lush green escarpments, walking tracks, and killer views of the city skyline. Plus, of course, barbeques!

Werribee Park

If you’re feeling a little bit ~fancy~ Werribee Park is the BBQ spot for you. Explore the manicured grounds and get your sticky beak on at the Werribee Mansion. Weekends don’t get much better than chilling in front of a casual 1807s mansion, do they?! There is also a heritage orchard on site! This is our go-to spot when you fancy feeling rich for the day.

Queensland

New Farm Park

New Farm Park is to Brisbane what mac is to cheese. That is, no Sunday is complete without nibbling on some cheese and cracking open a cold one by the river. Get in early to snag yourself a barbeque by the river (complete with views across to Bulimba’s mansions), pack a Frisbee, and sit back and pet all the puppers who strole on by. Best day ever?

Roma St Parklands

Oh, Roma St Parklands. This inner-city oasis is seriously under appreciated. There’s a stunning lake you can set up for the day by, a rainforest and fern gully to explore, a vibrant flower garden, and most importantly a precinct literally dedicated to celebration! Complete with a water wall, a living mural, barbeques and sprawling lawns to chill out on, this is our fave spot for a weekend catch up and of course, celebration. Sorry, we had to.

South Bank Parklands

South Bank Parklands reminds us of what we love about our country’s tropical capital. Sweeping views, Bougainvillea lined tunnels, heck, there’s even a beach! Our fave way to spend a weekend at Southbank is to snag a lawn chair on the grassy knoll and bring a plate from the BBQ and a drink or two. The barbeques here are also super shady and make the perfect escape from the Queensland heat.

Ready to get your BBQ on? Don’t forget to grab a pack of Johnnie & Ginger to add to your weekend essential list. Find your nearest stockist here.
