Beauty Ingredients You’ve Never Heard Of (That Are Everywhere Right Now)

beauty ingredients

Sea kelp bio-ferment. Bee venom. Blue tansy. Fancy ingredients used to whip up (even fancier) dishes in a hatted restaurant, perhaps? No, just a few of the latest must-have ingredients found in the beauty products we can’t stop raving about.

We all had a moment where we fell in love with the coco (coconut oil, that is), if it contained coconut oil, it was good enough for our face, body, hair and basically everything that we created in the kitchen. We definitely saw a shift that found us opting for products compromised of more ‘natural’ ingredients following the coconut-phenom. Well, now we’re onto bigger and better things; because the latest must-have beauty ingredients are so FAR from the norm, chances are you might never have even heard of them (yet!). Behold, some the most bizarre beauty ingredients that you need to know about right now…

Blue Tansy

What it is

Blue tansy is a flower that is actually poisonous if ingested (yikes!). When applied to your skin, it’s soothing, nourishing, redness-calming and radiance boosting. Just don’t eat it.

Where to find it

One of the best things about this ingredient is that if a product contains it you’ll definitely know about it. Because blue tansy so potent, chances are that the product will be bright blue, like Sunday Riley’s Luna Sleeping Night Oil which promises brighter, firmer, clear skin by morning when used before bed. As soon as it’s been absorbed by the skin, it’ll turn clear (phew!).

Charcoal

What it is

Okay, we’re sure you’ve heard of charcoal—hopefully you didn’t receive a bag of it for Christmas. But in the beauty realm, charcoal brightens skin, boosts radiance, quickly detoxifies and clears imperfections.

Where to find it

An instant skin pick-me-up whenever you need it, Dermalogica’s Charcoal Rescue Masque only needs to be left on for 7 to 10 minutes to detox, brighten and smooth skin.

Mongongo Oil

What it is

Touted the NEW coconut oil, this super-oil hails from Africa and is found within the unusual fruits that grow on the Manketti Trees. It’s high in Vitamin E and nourishes, protects and hydrates the skin (and hair!) like nothing else.

Where to find it

Try Goldfaden MD’s Fleuressence—a facial oil enriched with a blend of completely pure botanicals and natural oils, our beloved Mongongo Oil being a key ingredient. It’s a luminous glow on demand (no make-up required). Post summer skin saviour = found!

Fermented Ingredients

What it is

Fermented ingredients are trending at the moment, though they’ve been around for years and years in the beauty world. Essentially it’s a process whereby ingredients are soaked in water, allowing the growth of good (beauty-boosting) bacteria. The likes of uber luxe, La Mer have a unique fermentation process whereby they bio-ferment sea kelp for months!

Where to find it

Crème de La Mer Moisturizing Cream—it’s been the secret of A-listers for decades, it’s an investment worth its weight in gold (or, sea kelp…).

Squalane

What it is

Squalane is naturally produced by our body. Because it mimics our bodies own moisturisers, when it’s applied topically it absorbs almost instantaneously, which means helloooo smooth, soft, glowing skin without the oiliness or stickiness.

Where to find it

Smashbox’s latest revolutionary make-up primer comes in oil form. Smashbox Photo Finish Primer Oil is absorbed by your skin immediately and adds instant lustre, no surprises that squalane is a key ingredient!

Snail Mucus

What it is

Oh, did you think we were joking? No, no, we mean actual snail mucus. It’s a thing. Proven to reduce the appearance of fine lines, replenish moisture and boost overall glowiness.

Where to find it

Ummm, snails? But really, try Korean-based Dr. Jart’s Time Returning Cream, available at Sephora Australia, it’s made up of 77% snail mucin and repairs damaged skin whilst boosting skin hydration.

Erythrulose

What it is

Attention all spray-tanners… As summer comes nears a close (big sob!) you may be resorting back to that trusty spray tan for a golden glow. Want to look bronzed sans orange undertones? That’s where erythrulose comes in, it’s a carbohydrate that produces a colour change in the skin (and no, it’s not a stain nor dye).

Where to find it

The latest and greatest spray-tans, they take longer to fade and produce a super natural colour that complements your skin tone (rather than masking it or working against it). Try Spraytoniqs spray tans, available nationwide.

Wine Oil

What it is

You know wine? Ummm, we’re sure you know wine well. But wine oil? It’s incredibly rich in antioxidants, it’s nourishing and rejuvenates dry skin. We’re sold.

Where to find it

Try Arcona’s Wine Oil available at Sephora Australia
