There is little in this world we consume like a cup of coffee. For a millennium it's been bought, sold, brewed and banned—part of religious proscription and noisy vilification. Part art and part science, brewing the perfect cup is as much about the beans and the people who make it . . . as it is the way we drink it.

So we've rounded up the best of the best of Sydney's artisan roasters and boasters, to make your morning mission for the perfect cup that little bit easier. You are welcome.

Double Roasters

Try their bags of ever-evolving single origin and terroir specific blends of caffeinated delights. Just get in quick, their small batch approach means beans are roasted in 12kg lots, keeping the Inner West seriously caffeinated.

Most Popular bean(s): Flight Path (blend)

199 Victoria Road, Marrickville NSW 2204

Ph: 02 9572 7711

Coffee Brothers

These two friends are all about the bros and the blend. Exposing North Shore coffee lovers (and beyond) to a jittering coffee wonderland with their specialty selection of organic single origin and blended coffee beans.

Most popular bean(s): Vanuatu Gold

54 Darley Street, Mona Vale NSW 2103

Ph: 02 8411 2190

The Source Espresso

With a love of sourcing high-quality, small-estate beans, these blenders and baristas take their role as the last stop between the farmer and the cup mighty seriously. And you can taste it.

Most popular bean(s): Lucky 7

6/914 Military Road, Mosman NSW 2088

Ph: 02 9969 1368?

Single Origin

Their ethos says it all – these guys are forever sourcing, sampling, cupping, roasting, measuring, calibrating, tweaking, blending and tasting—they take their coffee damn seriously. This is heaven for the bean nerd and a Toby Maguire favourite.

Most popular bean(s): Reservoir (house blend) or the constantly rotating single origins (up to 50 per year)

60-64 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills NSW 2010

Ph: 02 9211 0665

Little Marionette

If you can elbow your way past the bearded hipster folk at morning coffee rush, you'll find a crew of roasters who take coffee as seriously as breathing.

Most popular bean(s): The house blend

Ph: 02 9557 8337
