Let’s be real, date night can be tough to navigate—especially if you’re a giant kid hiding in an adult’s body. Between syncing up schedules, choosing a venue, and then trying to figure out a way to hide the fact that you don’t know how to function in public as an adult. This one is a shout out to all of you giant kids, just trying to survive date night, and have some fun along the way.
As far as one-stop-date shops go, Westfield Sydney is pretty damn good at the best of times, but during Vivid, they’re stepping it up even more. There’ll be plenty to eat and see, but our favourites are probably the games—it’ll break the ice in three seconds flat. Speaking of ice, MYER even has a fully functioning ice rink (see what we did there?).
When you walk through the doors the first thing you’ll see is a giant (trust us, it’s big) Jack-in-the-box, before things get even crazier (in a fabulous way). All of the escalators on levels five and six have been overhauled to look like neon-lit, rainbow stairways and we just hope they plan to leave them like this forever. There’ll be a massive installation of snakes and ladders spanning multiple floors, and a fluorescent monkey barrel, all with moving parts so you can live out some of your childhood memories—supersized. To up the nostalgia factor, there’ll also be hula-hoop entertainers and stilt-walkers roaming Pitt Street, a casual roller skate on a treadmill, and moving yo-yos to boot.
All good date nights have one thing in common—the food. If you’re a giant kid (aren’t we all?), you’ll want to head to restaurants that don’t take themselves too seriously (but still serve up delicious food). For something more casual, head straight for level 5, where you can build your own pizza at Fratelli Famous, eat all of the dumplings at Din Tai Fung, or get your Greek on at Zeus. If you’re happy to settle in before you hit the games, then we suggest that you go all the way to level 5, where Sky Phoenix and its Chinese banquet is waiting for you.
If you want to take it to a whole new level (pun intended), then head for the sky, or specifically—Sydney Tower. They’re putting on a special 360 Wonderland dinner during Vivid, which will see you and your date entering the crazy world of Wonderland.
To ensure date night will be a guaranteed good time, Westfield Sydney has joined forces with the creative geniuses over at UTS—the students. If you venture all the way to level 6 you'll find lit-up hopscotch, holes to poke your head through for a photo (we all secretly love these, right?), and dress ups. There is also sweet, sweet carnival food like glow in the dark balloons and fairy floss (be still our beating bellies).
Westfield Sydney is running a competition during Vivid with $1000 up for grabs. All you have to do is post your fave childhood memory on the socials and tag @westfieldsyd. Good luck!
