Big beaches are fun and all but everyone knows the crowds in Sydney can get overwhelming at times. Enter the Day Tripper guide, your go-to for finding next level locations around the city to escape those damn hordes.
In other words, your dreamy (and short) day trip is absolutely sorted. Roll up your towels and slap on your Birkenstocks, here's how to make a break for calm, quiet and blissful nature.
Location: Gerringong Falls
ETD: 2 HOURS 30 MINUTES, SOUTH EAST OF SYDNEY
Enter Gerringong Falls. This gem is 150m waterfall in southeast NSW and only a two-and-a-half hour drive from Sydney.
Park at the corner of Budderoo Plateau Road & Gerringong Falls Walking Track. Then hit the fire walking trail for another 4kms by foot, which will take approximately an hour to get to the top of the falls (a lot less if you decide to bring your bikes). The walk is mainly flat, so we’re definitely cheering right now.
For Your En-Route Caffeine Fix
You’ll want to drive through Albion Park for your morning pick-me-up cup of coffee (or even Nutella hot choccy) at Blue Jay Café. You can also grab yourself a sweet treat to pack away for the hike ie. About 10 or so of the lemon bars. From here, it’s only another 55 minutes to the falls fire trail.
For A Spot Of Lunch
Drive back through Albion Park for some of the best burgers on NSW’s south coast at Joe’s Milkbar. Hit up the “Old Mate” burger for all the standard fillings and then finish it off with one of Joe’s famous original glaze doughnuts, dressed in a swish of dark chocolate ganache.
Note: If you want to pop down for a swim to refresh yourself after the hike, head over to Jones Beach at Kiama Downs for a gorgeous view of the coastline.
