12 Free Things To Do In Sydney This July

By Jessica Best - 30 Jun 2017

Sydney’s Best Nutella Pizzas

Three cheers for all you legends who have made it this far! Yep, we’re with you on this one, how is it already July? While you’ve been busy perfecting your indoor winter get-up, we’ve been conjuring up the most epic events around town that won’t cost you an arm and a leg (In fact, they won’t cost you anything!).

Here are 12 free things to do this July!

Bastille Day

Well, Bastille Day is back and it’s set to be better than ever (naturally) so you’ll want to clear a few days in your calendar. Expect mighty food offerings from France (duh), Germany, Greece, Portugal and Switzerland (we’re not complaining), plus a heap of beers and wines. And yep, the same as last year, the open-air cinema is also on the return which means you’ll get to watch movies in the comfort of an outdoor bed… again!

When: 13 July - 20 July
Where: Circular Quay

John Conway Tonight, Sunday Nights @ Cafe Lounge Surry Hills

Not going to lie, if you haven’t already been to a John Conway showdown you’re missing out, because the team behind this legendary comedy is funny AF. It’s weird as hell in all the ways you want it to be; epic one-liners, tolerable puns (kidding—we bloody love them) and skits so loosely crafted we couldn’t imagine calling anything else comedy TBH. Basically, it’s ABC perfection and you need to be in the audience, STAT.

When: Sunday nights
Where: Cafe Lounge, Surry Hills

AGNSW: The National Exhibition

For works in contemporary Australian art, The National 2017: New Australian Art is a six-year initiative and totally unique series. The mixed-medium (including installations and performance) exhibit will feature a collection of works from emerging, mid-career and established artists drawn from around the country, and Aussie artists practicing overseas.

When: Every Day until Sunday 16th of July
Where: The Art Gallery of NSW

All About Flowers

Curated by the award-winning team at the Royal Botanic Garden Sydney, All About Flowers showcases indoor garden beds and green walls packed with all the Moth Orchids, all the Begonias, all the Hydrangeas, all the Garvieae and a heap more. Yep, this one’s sure to bring you all the instafame too.

When: Until July 30
Where: The Royal Botanic Garden

Art On The Street

Bondi Winter Magic is making an appearance once again which means you’ll get access to hundreds of original pieces to fill and decorate your abode (trust us, it’ll look one hundred times better with these bad boys).

When: 16 July, 10am-3pm
Where: Roscoe Street Mall, Bondi Beach

The Dark Matters Exhibition At White Rabbit Art gallery

Contrasting ideas of black and white, light and dark lie at the heart of this seriously awesome collection of work. The Dark Matters is an exhibition that focuses on highlighting the difference between yin and yang and we guarantee you’ll want to stick around the gallery for an entire day.

When: Until July 30
Where: White Rabbit Art Gallery, Chippendale

Cactus Juice Comedy, Monday Nights @ Newtown Hotel

This is open mic comedy at it’s finest, so we’re sold already. Hit up the Newtown Hotel for your one-way ticket to winning first ears to the freshest comedy around, by fresh we mean new comedians trialling new material, guaranteed NSFW vibes all ‘round.

When: 8pm, Monday nights
Where: Newtown Hotel

Nutella Road trip

PSA the best road trip is already happening right now, IRL. A Nutella food truck, also known as the best god damn thing E-V-E-R. Yep, this little hazelnut beaut is tracking the east coast which means you’ve got the perfect excuse for a road trip to go and meet this lil’ gem at one of its delicious stops.

When: Until July 5th
Where: Various locations; Sydney, Manly, Penrith, Central Coast, Newcastle, Port Macquarie, Coffs Harbour, Lennox Head, Byron Bay, Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sunshine Coast

Stillness Exhibition

Ok, let’s be honest, this exhibition is about as relaxing as a one month holiday to the Maldives (we wish we were joking). You’ll find a heap of curated works at the Stillness Exhibition all grappling with ideas of stillness (surprise) and we kid you not, they’re actually beautiful. So beautiful you’ll more than likely want to be a peaceful human for the rest of your life. Until Sydney peak hour traffic hits.

When: Ends July 3
Where: Gaffa Gallery

Be Live The City Exhibition

This exhibition brings to life the city’s rich past by documenting some pretty special moments in time. You’ll see firsthand history’s effect on who we are today #deep.

When: July 30
Where: Customs House

The Rocks Aroma Festival

If pouring, frothing, sipping and savouring are all on your list of things to do then we think (read: know) that the Rocks Aroma Festival is a caffeinated and delicious hullabaloo that you need to tick off. And expect one major coffee buzz after it all.

When: July 24, 10am-5pm
Where: The Rocks, Sydney

Karaoke @ Miller’s Point

Claim your well-deserved singing fame at this free karaoke down at Millers Point. We already know you’ve ticked off most of the karaoke spots in Sydney, so there’s no harm in adding this one to the list! Pre-drinking karaoke sesh #amirite?

When: Every Tuesday, 12:30-3:45pm
Where: Henry Jensen Community Centre
