Is Pitaya The New Acai?

So we all know what acai is, have tasted a fair few, and are probably guilty of posting a few pics on Insta. But what about its bright-pink counterpart pitaya? It’s taking over our menus, our feeds, and our minds. But what is it?

Pitaya is pretty much a fancy name for dragon fruit, that pretty pink fruit that is white with black spots in the middle. If you’ve been to Thailand or Bali, there’s a good chance you’ve come into contact with this bright and refreshing fruit. Most of the time, you’ll find pitaya in bowl form, blended with tasty fruits and presented to you like a rainbow offering of happiness.

As much as we love a cool, refreshing acai bowl, sometimes its goodness it stolen by half a bottle of apple juice, a huge portion of granola and a dollop of honey.

Naturally sweet, pitaya is usually blended with a few other fruits to thicken it, topped with a sprinkle of granola, just like an acai bowl, but different. Full of vitamins and antioxidants, pitaya has been known to boost immunity, and potentially even lower blood pressure. Plus, it’s delicious and can be jazzed up with pretty much anything you like. Try blending with frozen berries or other fruit if you want to make your own, then topping with some shredded coconut.

If you’re looking to get your hands on a pitaya bowl in Sydney, we’ve got you covered. We headed to one of our favourite North Bondi haunts, Speedo’s Café, to check theirs out. Hint: it’s awesome.

Not too sweet, perfectly refreshing, chock-full of goodness, and it’s an unbelievable shade of magenta that is begging to be plastered all over your Insta feed. Owner Suzy tells theirs has “No added sugar, it’s 100% dairy free, gluten free, vegan, and made with so much love!” You can see it, too. It’s almost to beautiful to eat. But not that pretty, because it’s delicious.

Will pitaya overtake acai? Who knows. But it sure is becoming much more prevalent in our menus and Insta feeds, so keep an eye out.
